So I am new wife and I done our first grow autos Northern Lights. Grow went great frosty flowers and then chopped them hung up then into mason jars with hydrometer in each jar. They lost smell , terpens and even became hard on the outside while still spongy in the middle even with regular burping just doesn’t seem to be even close to what we expected it to be harsh, hayfever, smelling like alfalfa anyone and everyone that can explain what this happened and how do we prevent it from our next lady in the dirt.
It will continue to smell like hay until properly cured. A hay smell is normal at this point. At that point the chlorophyll will have dissipated and the smell will transition to terpine smells.
The uneven moisture content should resolve during curing. If you are using Mason jars to cure, then maintain ~70F and ~60% RH. Be sure to burp the jars a couple of times a day for the first week, then once a day, and then after 3ish weeks you should have a great final product. The harshness will also resolve with curing.
Appreciate you bro like always I do wanna clarify is supposed to be 68 rh or 60? because we aimed and we’re closer to maintaining 70° @ 60-63% rh.
Damn right on my brother we were burping overtime because the jars were getting 68RH and outta rookie panic I was burping and spinning them constantly afraid of mold etc.
You can sweat your bud by placing them in paper bags for 12 to 24 hours. That will help pull the moisture out of the center of the buds as well. Also, look at Grove Bags. Once bud is dry, you sweat the bud, then place in the bags, place in a cool dark spot and forget about it. No burping needed. The bag maintains the proper RH and allows the good gasses to stay while releasing the bad gasses, therefor no need to burp.
Sorry, dude. It’s early and I meant to say 58 to 60 RH. My bad!
Nice Save grow bro I know I read dozens of fellow growers and all said bout 60Rh but TBH. I was going all that out… Because you said different. LMAO not to put anything on you I just do trust you and a few others in the forum because of what u helped us with and what I see you helping others with seem to have the wisdom it takes and the generosity to share with us who don’t thanks again brother!
No doubt looked at them and definitely considering them for the next lady that is just starting now actually. I was hoping to just grow, chop and smoke I am very impatient because I I wanna know how it turned out if it tastes like Garlic and Fuel or whatever I appreciate great weed and maybe the taste of it more than the high!
When drying weed shoot for a slow drying period 8 to 10 days . Temperature 64 to 68 degrees, humidity around 50 The amount of foliage you remove before hanging to dry also plays into the factor.
Good luck
Thank you!
I like to take out product off the trellis from drying when the stems are ‘about’ to snap off by hand. Somewhat of a leathery feel. Next everything goes in plastic totes with food grade lines for a few days. This gives me the ability to keep the lid open for an extra dry, shut the lid to maintain or roll up the liner and shut the lid to ‘sweat’ the bud as @ChittyChittyBangin mentioned. Sweating is basically trying to remove any extra moisture that might be liengering around deep in the stems.
Once the product is dryed to the consistency I’m looking for I put it in a good grade turkey bag. (This is how I cure) This bag gose into a second bag. The double bagged product gose into a tote with a food grade liner. When working with a lot of product you need to sometimes think on a larger scale.
I will open each bag once per day for about one week. After that the product is good to store. The smells and stones will slowly get stronger over time.
I sometimes put a 2 way humidity pack in the middle of each bag but is truly not necessary.
Hope this helped alittle.
Happy farming…
@HippieRunner1
Nice mobile setup you got there.
Thanx man!
Read up on grove bags.
Thank you I appreciate the help and time to get back to me.
I have man sounds good to me but I also think that burping jars or bags doesn’t seem that difficult, in the same breath I don’t wanna grow great and then end up with kindling for smoke.
Thats why i recommend the grove bags
I agree with @Audiofreak Grove bags are great get yourself a moisture meter and when its in the 10 - 13% range bag it up can vacuum seal it if you want but the zip lock terp bags are set and forget with me happy growing
