First time I’ve looked at trichomes to decide a harvest date instead of pistil hair color percentage. Also the first time I’ve had a microscope.
100% sativa Strawberry Cough, so I want to keep the energetic upper high of the strain. Other ILGM posts said to harvest with milky white trichomes or at the very first sign of amber trichomes, so I’m trying to time it right.
Small bud taken from the lower part of the canopy of a SCROG, but seems similar to the rest of the flowers on this one. There are a lot of yellowing leaves.
Some look milky to me, but I’m not sure. Maybe they’re all clear and it’s just distance from the microscope lens? What do you think?
So my harvest time should be all milky, or maybe like mostly milky trichomes and just starting to turn amber? I’m probably jumping the gun since the pistil colors are only around 20%.
Hairs are compliments from King Ody. He donated that for free.
Trichomes on the buds, not the sugar leaves. For smoke I harvest at around 8-9 weeks. Just as amber shows in the buds. For pain and sleep meds I harvest around 10-11 weeks.
I see cloudy and clear. Best advice I received on my first grow looking for the sativa high, was to let them go until you start seeing amber. At that point you should be damn near all cloudy.
This can still be a difficult part of the process for me. I am still always excited to chop em down!
One of my favorites was an Amnesia Haze that I harvested early because of location issues. It was probably 3/4 milky 1/4 clear. I loved the effects. Heady and made me want to be productive. I would mow, clean, build. No headaches like I have heard will happen if harvested early. You can cut and dry a single bud to test and see where you like your maturity levels. Harvesting before or after most other people is not wrong, just a choice. I may lose a bit of weight because of this, but if I like the effect better that’s ok with me. I know I’m odd…Lol
Me too me too. Especially if they appear all milky looking and smell good. Makes me the same. Get all excited and sometime feel like I chopped a bit early but it is still super good but feel it might have been better if
@Spiney_norman i have a AH Auto that is very close and debating when to chop. Plant is a Triploid and is basically all flower. It has been pushing pistils late in its life
Now for me Its ready. But You may want more amber.
When you see a cola shaped like this its usually because of high light intensity.
And they will keep pushing new flowers and pistils.
Not saying its a bad thing tho…Just sharing a bit of info
@SteveSS396 That for sure is a genetic flaw. A triploid takes very specific breading to create a plant with a third set of chromizones that is sterile. Can not produce seeds even if pollinated. The growth of a triploid appears normal to the eye.
I also have cats, so I always wash my buds when I harvest. Lots of stuff comes off of them. Doesn’t take long, and it really makes the buds look nice, and does not effect quality. If you’ve never tried it, you should. It’s the way to go, especially with pets in the house.
