1st time grower, looking for advice

Hello All,
First time grower, so I’m not exactly sure what I’m suppose to look for. I ordered 5 wedding cake seeds, all germinated and started well ( I think).
These were put in soil on 3/21/20. I live in northern ny, so I have started them indoors. I downloaded the grow bible and have followed the tips as best I could. These are in coast of Maine organic potting soil, and watered as needed. I bought a moisture reader that turned out to be useless, so I’m using my judgment on when. When I do water I use a spray bottle. I had the temp between 70 and 75, but dialed back to 65-67 because I thought it looked like they were stretching. I also brought the light closer to try to stop that. Using a 40 watt full spectrum light. Anyone with experience please take a look and fire away with feedback. I’m really having fun with this and want to do it right. Thanks!

Forgot to add my light time in all that. I have an auto timer for the light. I am currently giving them 18 hours of light a day.

You are right on, already brought the light closer. U will know you are close enough if the stem slows its upward growth and will fatten up pretty qick. Are you transplanting these later into bigger pots? If so, what kind?

Little leggy I’d say

I can put them directly into the ground in a preparred spot, and I also have several 55 gallon plastic drums that I cut in half. I own a large amount of land, surrounded by only private land owners who are good neighbors, so I’m not too worried about anyone finding them. What would you suggest?

I thought so, trying to correct it. Any advice? I have moved the light closer and brought the temp down. I also read about using a fan, and have used the fan on and off the last two days. I also read something about repoting them. Is that something I should consider?

Well, you will love em when you move them outside with those big pots. I guess it just depends on what you want to do. If you want to stick em in the dirt, there are some good outdoor growers on here that do the same. If you want to keep them halfway or completely above ground, I would go with fabric pots. They are exellent if you have a hard time watering at the right time or the right amounts. You can find them online for as much as 300 gallons if your crazy enough to grow some big girls. lol

I wouldn’t transfer them until your leaves are at the edge of the pot. Usually a perfect sign your roots are ready to change. What kind of light is it? That will also determine how far away you want it. I usually keep led or cfl lights about 6-12 inches from my seedlings and when the leaves reach the edge of the solo cup I will transfer to their forever home.

When you bring the light closer, you will see the leaves fatten, darken, and those stems will fatten up too. She wants to get enough light to spread her feet (roots) first. Then she will spread her arms (leaves) too. Here is a pic of two Banana Kush girls in solo cups that had led 12 inches from the dirt. This is a 2-week pic for reference for ya.

It is an LED light. A cheap one off amazon. Probably should have spent more on a better one, but it was only intended to get them started. I will attach a pic of the specs if that helps. I think I may have had the light too high to start and that made them shoot up too fast as well. Right now I’m about 4 inches above. I haven’t noticed any upward growth the last few days, but the leaves are taking off well it seems.

Thanks man! That definately helps since I’m not exactly sure what to look for. Exactly why I got on here!

That’s actually the same type UFO/Puck I used for these two girls. I will post a sample of my ghetto method for them. lol. The blurple UFO it’s called. lol But I really like it for seedlings. I put my seedlings in solo’s, then into a 7-gallon plastic container or pot lined with foil. The UFO on top. So I will keep that light about 12 inches from the top of the plant.

Toker, are you an indoor grower or outdoor? Or both?

Indoor, live in the SW, USA so it’s illegal to grow outdoors in city limits. I have a grow permit as part of my MMJ card here…
