Will this heater be safe for my grow tent?

I know that this type of heater with a fan and heating element is not recommended, and that oil filled heaters are ideal.

But I only have a 3x3 space to grow in, and the only oil filled heaters I see would take up half of that space and be way over powered.

I got this 400 watt heater and I have a temperature controlled plug with a probe to read temp inside the tent.

I positioned the heater so it will be underneath the lights so I doesn’t damage the lights, and above where the top of the plant would be; I can move the heater as the plant/light move.

If I set the temperature of the plug to only turn the fan on if the temperatures get too low and turn off as soon as they’re back to safe levels, and position the temperature probe next to the plant, would this be safe?

I dont actually expect temperatures to get low that often since I will be running my lights during the night when temps are lowest. So the heater would probably only run sometimes, and for only a couple minutes at a time.

If humidity is not a concern, is it safe to have this type of heater and in the spot it’s in? Wouldn’t the temp controlled plug prevent it from overheating the plant?

It does get hot to the touch, I was thinking about connecting ducting/PVC to the heater to disperse the heat more.

The heater is like 6 inches by 4 inches, very compact.

I just would worry about fire risk…but I was a risk manager for work…likely ok. I put my heater right outside the tent by the air intake.

Those are the most dangerous and expensive to run heaters you could think of using and I for one would never use one of those.

For less than the cost of the electricity to run a 400watt heater like that, a purpose built greenhouse heater is the only sensible solution.

If anyone could find me a suitable heater online for cheap I’d appreciate it. Less than $50 is preferred. 3x3 space.

Just google search for greenhouse tube heater and you should find them available for less than $100, $50 might be pushing it.

Have one for each tent here, and If you are running controllers they are analog crank heater and controller takes it from there :+1:

I like the results of putting the heater outside the tent pointed towards the inline vent.

If there was any fire hazard, which I doubt, it would happen outside the tent.

I will invest in a tube heater like suggested if/when this winter starts getting more cold.

I don’t expect the heater to be needed most of the time.

Thank you everyone for the input.

Put a container of water in front of it if inside tent. That will help with humidity. I have found that a heater with a fan will dry out the plant if not aimed at a container of water.

Read the instruction manual. There is likely a min distance from things this heater is ment to be. Run it for an extended time and feel the unit itself. If you cant hold onto it for more then 30 seconds without burning your hand its gonna melt your tent.

Use the same one on a controller works great in a 2x4 and 3x3 tent, ordered a 1500 watt for the 4x4 I am getting set up.
