Why do we grind weed?

Recently started being interested in weed after a couple decades away due to drug-testing at work. Now I just don’t care

I have been growing since a year ago, and just harvested a tent of Maui-Wowie and a tent of Granddaddy Purple, plus I have a lot of White-Widow and GDP from last year still. I only smoke one bong hit a night, an hour or two before bed, so I give most of my weed away to neighbors and friends.

But I am wandering from the point, which is: when I grind weed to use in my bong, it seems like I am knocking off a lot of kief. Granted, I can recover it from the bottom chamber of the grinder, and use it later.

But why grind at all? We never ground weed in the 70s and 80s. Just rolled it up or put it in a pipe. Granted, it was all leaf then, but still, I can just break off a piece of bud and put it in the bong bowl and voila! That way all the keif stays on the bud.

What am I missing?

It really brings out the terpines when ground. It also allows it to burn more evenly.

Well we broke weed down to get the stems and seeds out on a album cover or a Rolling Stone magazine. It’s hard to just wrap a bud in a paper and get it to smoke correctly.
We never used a spice grinder, like is common now, but it served the same purpose.
It’s been years since I had to wet a finger to wet one side of the joint that was burning too quickly so the other side could catch up!
My el cheapo plastic grinder doesn’t have a keif screen or anything so when I dump it I pretty much get it all. and it get’s rolled into a joint. There is some build up in the grinder over time and I have to use a knife tip to clean out the nooks and crannies and that goes into a joint too!

In comparison I’d rather smoke grinder weed than hand broken down weed any day!

Another thing is we try to keep it at a higher moisture content now. In a baggie in the 70s it would turn to tiny pieces and dust with a little pressure. Now kept at 62% its not as easy to get it broke up enough to roll. A grinder makes it easy.

Unless you have that super sticky, or really dry, grinding makes for a smoother smoke also. I don’t like gringers much, unless the weed is right for what I like. Gotta say it beats the heck outta spending 30 minutes breaking up a joint of good good, only to have your fingers rip the paper up because they’re too sticky

I have smoked as grinded and also in chunks torn apart. I prefer the grinder with a kief catcher at the bottom. Mine is a Kozo Grinder and I absolutely love it. The kief is pretty thick at the bottom so I will scrap some for a hit with some concentrate.

So, do everything you can to grow “rock hard bud” then grind it up till it’s airy to smoke it. Right? Makes no sense to me. A gram of frosty weed is a gram of frosty weed. You break it up to use it anyway you look at it.

Thanks all. I don’t roll joints, just do bong hits. But I might still grind my weed just to get a load of kief once in a while. Maybe I’ll experiment between chunk and ground and see if I can tell the diffrence.

I have never grinded weed always just broke it down on a shoe box lid rolled in my 1.5s none of this blunt stuff or used a water bong with ice water

I like to use my trimming scissors, mostly because they’re easy to keep clean. The dryness of the bud seems to have the most impact on keif “loss” - dryer the bud, the more falls off. I think I probably “lose” less overall with scissors vs the grinder, but it’s not my main reason for using them, just never really liked the grinders.

I don’t smoke very often once every couple months. Wife smokes a lot did i say a lot cause i ment a lot.
She preferes to use a grinder. To each their own.
Now when i do smoke i just rip off about three hits worth from a top cola put it in my bowl and hit it a couple times. Empty the bowl gone or not. If i want another hit i load the same way. The first couple hits are the best and that is all i want is the best and the weed i grow is dank (DrsDank) Yes its wasteful very wasteful. Don’t care have lots every grow and in-between.
For kief call it what you will i shake dry ice hash. Get between a 1/4 and a 1/2 every grow. That larf and trimmings is loaded with crystals…
Puff puff don’t pass. Fill your own bowl the jars setting over there.

Awesome topic lol. A buddy I smoke with all the time likes to debate this very topic with me whenever he sees me break out my grinder. Hell, he goes one step further in his rhetoric, I love my bong packed with ice chips-feels like a smooth menthol type hit which I dig. He on the other hand swears I’m destroying the bud by grinding it and he only wants to smoke from a bowl so he can, I guess, savor the taste lol. I’m not saying I don’t want weed that tastes smooth but hanging out with a bougee smoker can be obnoxious lol.:upside_down_face::sunglasses:

Of what? The tars left behind from a previous sesh? The flavonoids and terps will evaporate along with the THC during the first burn and then you’re mainly smoking plant material. It’s difficult to get the inside stuff till it oozes out to the surface, and by then it’s been changed by heat.
Another plus to grinding - it opens up the inside of the bud making it easier to access the resins and oils on the inside of the bud.
I think you can get more quality bongs rips and a much better high by breaking it down and doing one-hits as opposed to shoving it all in a bowl and trying to burn them out from the inside of the bud. _ If you follow what I’m saying.
I was just testing my theory and my thoughts might not translate exactly from my brain to my fingertips!

 :joy:

@Tylersays I think a grinder lets your burn stay smooth and even. A tight nug sometimes takes too long to get into it lol. It all boils down to personal preference, there ain’t no wrong way to the Highlands lol.

I’ve been looking for a new (and good!) grinder. I even thought of posting the question here for a new grinder. Sir…thank you for saving me some time picking a new brand of grinder to try. What size do you use? 2, 2.5, 3, or 4 inch? I think 4" is too big…I’m leaning towards the 2.5 or 3.
