Really really good lookin’ trichome pics Will. Thanks for sharing everyone.
Absolutely. Great help, great seeds and great nutes. Thanks to all the guys for this site.
still look pretty good though
Mistakes I have made so far.
-
PH : I put limestone in the bottom of my pots to allow the water to drain through the holes. This made it impossible to use runoff as a test for PH.
-
PH : I used well water, which here is PH 7.8 or higher and tried to adjust. Early on this made it very difficult.
-
PH : I used sulfur granules to lower the PH. While this did a good job, when I gave up on the well water and switched to distilled, the sulfur was still in the soil and caused my PH to swing way off in the acid direction.
-
Pots : Although at the time my cat litter container grow boxes seemed like a great idea, I need smaller containers to maximize the grow space. This will also allow me to better adjust PH because of the smaller amount of soil.
-
Temperature : One of the most difficult challenges with this grow was with temperature. This is the cold time of year and I didn’t take into account just how much this would affect the temperature inside the greenhouse. I’ve fixed it now by putting a heater in the room the grow tent is in and making the hoses for the fans height adjustable.
-
Yield : I didn’t let the plants grow quite tall enough before going into flowering. I have that part figured out much better now that I’ve seen how tall the plants get.
-
Compatibility : I am growing Super Silver Haze (flower period approx 80 days) and White Widow (flower period approx 65 days.) In the future, I’ll use strains with closer flower periods so that the grow tent becomes available as soon as they’re finished instead of having to wait for the second strain to mature.
Right now I’m fighting some nutrient deficiencies caused by my PH dip into the low numbers. I’ve begun adjusting that and will monitor more closely. My next grow will be easier to maintain because of what I’ve learned this time.
Hey OG…i’em having a nutrient problem also. Bottom leaves yellowing on some and others yellowing tip of the leaves. The ones with yellowing leaves need more nitrogen and the other one’s are getting to much. This is the draw-back of having a large grow…lol A big learning experience.
Will
OG…i’em sorry brother. I didn’t see the pic you but up and when I did I thought it was my pic…LOL
That’s awesome dude…makes it worth while…As I say…SWEEEEEEEET !
WILL
I’d be adding to that drool. Nice job OG!! And your right about the learning curve here. But our stock is most certainly be going up the next go round.
Gettin close buddy!! Same as mine, though one pic looks like their a little milky. But it’s not quite in focus so it could be that. Wish I could take pics like yours does.
I’m thinking I have around two weeks till done, though could be longer. How bout you OG? Their lookin great by the way!
These girls should be getting started around the middle of January. The single white widow survivor, if it makes it that long, will be ready around the 11th.
Something else I’ve learned. PH. EVERY time I mix nutrients, I will then add PH adjuster to bring the PH right to 6.5. No sulphur, np miracle grow for acid loving plants, just ph up or down to get to 6.5.
I absolutely can’t wait to start the next one.
Absolutely. Also the root ph off the runoff. Was stunned to see how far I was off.
I sacrificed two plants to science. (The leaves were in bad shape so we trimmed the dead and dying ones off. Two days later, most of the pistils had changed color and the plants looked really bad.) Both plants had buds, so I started the dry/cure process on them by trimming all the fan leaves and as many of the bud leaves as I could get to.
Two days of hanging upside down and the buds were starting to feel “crispy” on the outside. Removed the buds and placed them in a mesh drying rack. Two more days in there and I moved both sets of buds to jars.
The White Widow plant has dried the most evenly so far. The Super Silver Haze has started being sticky on the outside again, I may move them to a paper bag for a day or so.
Smoke test results:
I’m a three hits and wait kind of guy. I packed a bowl and although I’m supposed to be vaporizing instead of smoking, for this test I decided to try smoking first.
Super Silver Haze:
I hit the bowl three times and sat down to wait. Of course it was harsh I haven’t finished curing yet. It didn’t take long before I felt the tight spot behind my eyes. Shortly after that, the buzz hit me full force and I felt the energy of a Sativa high envelope me. I then finished the bowl and began to take care of my chores for the day.
My time sense was off for the rest of the day. The buzz was actually quite good considering the plant never made it to maturity and that the bud hasn’t been cured yet.
The high lasted approximately 6 hours (by the clock, not by my time sense) and even then there was the Indica effect for quite some time after.
In spite of the fact that I grew it myself, I am going to give it four stars **** out of five. I am impressed with the quality of the Super Silver Haze and if it wasn’t for the extra long flowering time, I might be tempted to grow it exclusively for myself.
White Widow:
I waited two days without smoking anything and then took three hits of the White Widow. In a few seconds I felt a little bit of an energy high. After five minutes, I finished the bowl. The energy lasted about an hour or so, and then the couchlock took over and I lay in front of the TV for another 3 hours before I felt like getting up. I hit the bowl one more time, an hour before bedtime and slept for a solid six hours that night. (I’ve been lucky to get two or three hours in a row.)
Again, in spite of my bias, I am giving this experience four **** out of five stars. And that mostly because it didn’t reach the end of the flowering period.
Both plants taste horrible and are harsh. That’s to be expected and I’ll test them each again on a daily basis…
I will revisit this test with the plants that go to full term and have been fully cured.
Great seeds!!!
Excellent descriptions. Thanks very much for sharing and keeping us up to date Old Goat.
I almost forgot about the edibles.
There were a lot of leaves trimmed from both these plants. I took those leaves and baked them at 290 for an hour. Then I ground them up with a vegetable chopper. Finally I “fried” them in butter. A pound of butter to be exact. Another hour of stirring and sautéing the green slime. I then pressed it into a sieve to get as much of the liquid as I could.
I used the butter to make chocolate chip cookies. A fresh start one morning with three cookies for breakfast. It took 20+ minutes to start feeling anything. It took an hour to get to what I would call a buzz. Five cookies lasted me an entire day of arguing with myself over whether or not I liked the high I got from the cookies.
Bad note about edibles…
It’s not good to try to cure the munchies with edibles. The cookie jar empties in record time.
Hmmm, you should maybe try ice water or bubble hash with all that trim. Then maybe the munchies won’t be so strong as you didn’t start off by eating yummy cookies, lol.
You don’t need expensive screen bags and this can be used for leaves, trim, chopped up stems or even moldy bud. The ice water extraction separates even the mold, literally washing the heavy trichomes as they sink and then siphon off the top water carefully, and the technique can be done repeated adding clean ice cold water more than once to further refine the trichomes from green or moldy water until all you have left is clear water and trichomes.
My wife said, “just what you need, more toys.”
Don’t you already have all this kind of stuff? Maybe she’ll let you borrow her kitchen mixer/egg beater? That’s what I use, a kitchen mixer. Or that can be your reason for getting the power drill with the paint mixer attachment, so you don’t abuse her kitchen mixer, lol.
