Hi all. This is my first attempt at growing. I have two separate questions on two different Autoflowers.
My first one is I just found these white specks on one of my plants. They crumble like a bread crumb when I touch them. Can anyone tell me what it is?
Thank you for tagging me …the second picture looks like there is some bud rot going on …have you tried to actually spread open the part that’s brownish looking …bud rot can be caused by over watering …the roots constantly being wet in a soil ,or it can also be coarse by a caterpillar eating your bud from the inside out …others may not agree but I see the hues of bud rot …the first pic is kind of alarming because it does not seem like an insect issue at all so that could also be mold forming and the sun drying it …I cannot be sure …but check that cola for sure …I was alerted to this possibility by many people on here but Incan specifically remember @thedeernad trojng me get a closer look and for sure there was a caterpillar deep in side the bud so I lost about 2 inches off the top
Thank you all for your input. It’s very helpful and appreciated. I’ve let up on watering so hopefully the rot will improve. I also removed all the white pieces a few days ago and haven’t found any others so far. Thanks again!
Man please inspect that cola …it has the same kind of dulled out brown rotting look mine did when I found a caterpillar dining on it for days …it can continue to spread rot even from one worm …just saying the longer you wait the more bud loss you’ll experience if it is one …and if it’s just rot …you’ll still want to cut it off before it spreads because rot is rot no matter the root of it …and it does the same thing …spreads
I also wanted to say the white things could be anything …literally a bird had stale bread and dropped it and that is where particles landed …it could be something simple as that …but also I want to point something out to you that is my reason for concern with bud rot …
The bottom arrow see how the leaves underneath are all that same dull brownish purple shade ? They are all the same exact hue as each other in that area no matter what part of the plant it is …hope I’m explaining it right …but also the top arrow .compare that more pale green color of leaf to all the other ones clockwise from it …which have that rich kush green color
I hope others that read here chime in that have experienced bud rot …I really think it’s exactly that …as painful as this may be …you may have to cut that off …like even a bit farther down where it still isn’t infected …also not sure if it’s from root rot the damage could be worse because it’s coming form the root system and not catapillar crapping and eating inside the bud like an apple
Seriously just trying to help you !!!
Someone else told me the white specks could be from a bird dropping crumbs too. I am keeping an eye out.
I am definitely going to trim it in the morning because it is spreading. I appreciate your help and your knowledge because this is my first attempt at growing and it’s so disappointing to see them not healthy. Thanks so much!
Those white chunks could be anything, i would just brush them off and focus on the bud rot at hand.
Anywhere that has anything close to a brownish hue to it warrants closer inspection. @Lacewing pointed out a few of these spots, but if was me, id be going over the whole plant, pulling buds open to check for caterpillars/rot spots and to let airflow in. If you find it, cut it out asap, then wash your tools!
In my opinon its easy yo find caterpillars if you follow the poop. Last season i noticed the poop in fan leaves below where the caterpillars were hanging out and snacking on my buds. Was a prety good method for finding out their general whereabouts…
Thanks for the tag. I’d suspect a couple of things… But none might be right… I would suspect pests of some sort, and I see what I think is an indication of some re-vegging, and I think @Lacewing may be right about the rot… Wish I had something definitive…
Bud rot does not improve, it only gets worse. The only way to stop it is to cut out the infected buds.
Keep this in mind, If conditions are such you see some bud rot, there will be more rot in buds you won’t see until you start to harvest.
Last year, I lost over half my harvest to bud rot / caterpillars. This year, as soon as I saw signs of rot, gently opened the buds and cut out the bad or the whole bud depending on how it grew and how much rot was present. Kept a close eye on the rest, harvested a week earlier than I really wanted. Last year I lost over half my harvest. This year I lost less than an oz.
I grow outside in super high humidity. I defoliate, especially the bottom third. Auto’s white widow and blue dream.
I just grow for personal consumption, so far I am thrilled with my results!
Yellow sugar leaves are the first sign. At the first one, gently pry the bud open and see what needs to go. For a fuzzy patch the size of a dime the bud looks like I took a big bite out of it.
Everything gets a gentle peroxide bath.
At harvest any bud with a cut out of it is used for edibles.
