I’m wonder which method is the best when trying to control Gnats before I begin? Mosquito bits? Added to wicking water through bottom? Most bits mixed and added through watering through top or lining the top with 2" sand?? Please chime in with your methods and English measurements sorry but ml.,l. All that jazz doesn’t make sense trying to find conversion charts. Thanks people.
The best method of preventing gnats is to avoid overwatering. They thrive in wet environments. Beyond that, growers use Mosquito Bits or Diatomaceous earth on top of the soil are effective.
Wicking water may be why you have gnat problems. Soil should dry out between waterings.
I’m not sure that precise measurement is necessary. Keep it simple and do your best to follow product instructions.
The only way to get rid of fungus gnats permanently is to use parasitic nematodes that eat the larvae, a bacteria called BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), or a parasitic mite. The mites and nematodes need temperatures over 18C (64F), the bacteria works in most temperatures above freezing. All 3 take about 2 weeks to make a difference but they break the gnat lifecycle and get rid of them until you reintroduce them with new plants that are infested.
