I have completely failed. I am on my third batch of seeds. Each batch has germinated little white tails. When put in potting soil at 80 degrees F, 3/8 to 1/2 inch deep, none have sprouted. I am on 8 1/2 days for a couple of seeds, and 5 1/2 on the other. I was told I overwatered the first batch, so the second one I was told not to water until sprouting. Nothing came up after 10 days. This latest batch, I am misting lightly once a day when the surface feels dry. I use humidity domes for all. Any suggestions?
Welcome. What kind of light are you using? I usually just Mist the inside of the Dome to Keep humidity high. And soil moist and warm.
Using 300W LED.
That should get the job done. Are you running the light 24 hours.
I am, yes. 24 hours.
I wouldn’t run 24 hours. I successfully grow start to finish on a 12/12. Most would recommend 18/6.
Ok. I will try that.
I am not optimistic at all, but at least it will save energy, if nothing else.
Don’t give up on your seeds. First I soak my seeds in a little cup of water for 24 hours then I usually germinate. In a moist paper towel clamshell between two saucers. When I get a tail. About 3/8 of an inch long. I plant in seedling cup . With black gold Seedling starter soil. There are several different brands of soil for seedlings. Keep misting the inside of the Dome couple times a day. you should get one pop It’s head out. Good luck. Just don’t give up.
Thanks! I won’t give up. I have been doing what you have described, except I have not been using black gold, but rather Sta-Green organic potting mix. Do you only mist the domes, or do you also mist the soil? Do you run your light 24/7? I have been, just to keep the soil warm.
I do give the soil just one small light mist and then Mist inside of the Dome. But I do not mist Soil every time. I do run my lights 24/7 until I get a little seedling about. One inch Then I cut back. 18/ 6 . As you mention the 24 /7 keeps soil warm until the seedlings appears. If you Google Starting seedlings. You will probably see five different ways. And they all work. People usually stick with what works best for them. Good luck.
My version. Soak seeds 18 to 24 hours. Transfer to damp toilet paper for 48 hours. Plant seed with tap about 1/4”. Then put into my grow tent on a 12/12 from start to finish.
We run our AC 24/7 at 69 degrees and its this cold in my bathroom which is where the seeds first start out before their forever home.
Thanks, Mr. Peat. I never thought of using toilet paper instead of a paper towel. I’m beginning to think that I am doing things pretty much right, but I’m either giving up too soon, or my seeds just aren’t very vigorous.
We don’t buy paper towels in this house. One they are over priced when a rag will accomplish the same thing. My sister in law goes through 2 rolls a day because she is paranoid.
I have been doing the damp toilet paper for almost 2 years come May. No issues.
I suspect that the soil that you are using is too hot for seedlings (not sure), but that soil certainly does not drain well…cannabis needs really good drainage, especially when they are young.
What do you recommend?
For starting and seedlings, just a cheap, low nutrient, starter soil. If it does not drain well, add some perlite.
Fox Farm Happy Frog is good soil. FFOF is pretty hot and I’m about to embark on using 6 cubic feet of it brand new.
I wouldn’t know what would be an example of such a soil.
