Been doing some research on what it is that causes the black ash . Some say because it wasnt flushed others say because its not cured. Im in the process of trying to figure this out. 4 plants, 2 of each strain. All went 10 weeks . Well let me start by saying i didnt actually flush but rather just fed with water for a 2 week period ,one i did not do anything to just regular feed cycle and one i actually did flush. So this is what i found. First in my case mind you, the one that was flushed seems to have the most harsh taste of all 4 and the most black ash. The one i did nothing to is slighty better then the flushed one. The ones that i just fed water to seem to be the better of the 4 burns nice some dark ash , not near as harsh with minimal flavor. Mind you all are rought 6 days into cure at most with minimal being 4 days… i know its way to early to tell due to chlorophyll but can anyone help me to understand this. Bei started growing my own most of the street stuff id get regardless of flavor had lots of black ash rarely did i get clean white ash whhich led me to grow my own . Just seems safer that way. At least i know for sure theres nothing else in it. So @ChittyChittyBangin @MidwestGuy @OGIncognito and anyone else that wants to help out please do. I only tagged these 3 because they are normally the ones that get me back on pace when i have issues. Could some plants have more oils in them that are not cured enough to maintain combustion? Using a moisture meter ( erickhill pen style mode 1 ) all buds come in at 11.3 or low reading all green light. Rh in jars ranger from 57 to 64. I burp them twice a day or if rh get higher then 64 i open jars for a few hrs. I also flip jars daily ,have no idea why i do bit i do lol. So with all that said, any one have any ideas ?
To be honest I’ve never paid attention to the color of the ashes. I do water feed the last week or 2. I’ve had some strains that were harsher than others but a good 30 day cure usually mellows out the harshness and improves the taste. I sample my buds from the time they’re done drying through several weeks of curing and can tell the improvement along the way
I do the same lol maybe im just not growing enough, its usually gone by 30 days . But i did gift some of my last grow to my best friend about 2 months ago. Went to an gathering at his home and to part in a bowl and wow… it was pretty awesome. Think ill just get to 2 weeks of cure and give it to him for a month or 2 . Lol. Im too impatient
Black ash is nothing more than unburned material. Not a thing to do with quality. If you continue to hit the bowl with fire it will eventually burn.
Think about charcoal. Wood That is placed in a fire in a closed environment with no air, or just even doused with water halfway through the combustion process, it will be a lump of black. Lit again and left to finish burning, it will turn white as it completely burns. A bud placed in a bowl that is covered with resin may or may not be completely burned. Same with a joint. Take some dried fan leaves with no trichomes on them and smoke them and I would say you will get a complete burn and white ash. Because without the resin it will have enough time to completely be consumed. The more resin there is the longer it will take to be completely combusted. In which case it will be black. So honestly the black ash is a better sign of quality then a white ash. Harshness is usually chlorophyll and just takes time to break down. My garage floor has a bunch of little black half burned buds on it. I have enough weed to not have to hit a bowl twice. I always start fresh.
I will try to find a great article I read on ash tests last year. It explained all this better than I.
exactly what I believe…
Yep, I think so too. I roll my joints quite tight, and about 2/3 of a gram each thickness of a pencil. They last for a good 10 minutes and usually get over 30 good full tokes of each. All white ash as it burns so slow. Have to wet the paper a bit before you light it so that the paper doesn’t burn first before the pot. If you don’t do that, the ash is a lot darker. Same weed, same tightness, way less number of tokes.
Me and the SIL used to count how many tokes we’d each get off a joint, always funny when you realize the last number you remember was 18 each before you forgot to keep counting!
…That number for me is 2 !
I had the same ordeal myself, wondering about whether flushing out a plant before harvest will improve its flavor and lend to a clean white ash…? Some say it does, some say it doesn’t. This seems to be the universal answer at most but common sense tells me that fertilizers don’t affect the taste of a tomato if its medium is flushed or not so why would it effect cannabis?
Just read something pretty interesting. So black ash is actually caused by uneven moisture content of bud but more so due to resin content. Flowers with higher resin content will release moisture slower then buds with lower resin content. Seems fair. It also said the the white vs black ash thing being a way to test quality came from the tobacco industry. They inturn put other things into cigarettes to compensate for moist tobacco to help it burn white ash to keep with white ash equals quality. Considering where the myth came from i wont be to concerned with it any longer.
The Tobacco industry …What can I say
