Trichome check for a 1st time grower

Would some of you more experienced growers mind looking over my trichomes? I believe they’re supposed to turn from clear to milky/cloudy, and then to amber - at which point growers would generally harvest. Strain is Gorilla Glue. To me they look clear-ish for the most part, but I see some that look like they’re turning amber in places as well, so I’m second guessing myself. Just trying to figure out when I should start the pre-harvest flush (I believe that should start 2 weeks before harvest, from what I’ve read). I’m currently 38 days into flowering.

Good Morning. That’s very frosty and yes the trichomes are clear and there are mostly white hairs. I believe you have a white to go yet. When you take the pictures you will need to look at the bud and not the sugar leafs.
They are looking good :+1:

I could be wrong but I think it’s early to be checking trichomes as it looks like you still have white pistils

A pic of whole bud would let us know what you are working with

Hey, thanks for the replies. A few more pics below. I’ve read gorilla glue flowers in 8-9 weeks, so I suppose I am jumping the gun a bit…just anxious I guess lol

They’re starting to cake up, but still have a ways to go. When the majority of the white hairs have changed to Amber/red and turned back into the flowers, look at you trichomes, on the buds. The trichomes on the sugar leaves will turn cloudy and amber before the flowers, so don’t use them as your estimate on time left.

Is that one getting the totally white tips in your last pic???

@Borderryan22 yeah, a couple of the top most buds started turning white on top. I think I had the light too close and it started bleaching them (smacks forehead), or at least I’m hoping it’s nothing worse than that

You’ve got 3-5 weeks depending on the high you’re looking for. Watch this video.

Keep an eye on the bud. The older growth versus the new growth. Amber will give a more couch lock high. I go with 30% amber for my tinctures.

I’ve read where they say this is just a chlorophyll abnormality because of light, with virtually no effect on the quality. But I’ve also read where it’s like mass gobs of trichomes built up also that makes those little parts ridiculously potent. Some will have it on middle buds further from the light than the colas, which stay green.

Hey plants looking great, like other above she needs more time. Take tricomes pic of bud not leaves. You can see the purple a little bit, this is what your looking for

I use 660nm red to produce them consistently. This is what they look like under magnification.

So light is almost definitely the reason for it. Have you done a potency test to see if they are stronger than buds of relatively normal color?

I ask because I’ve been growing outdoors, but too much bs lol. So I’m looking at a tent kit for now to finish my 2 dwarf autos, then to upgrade light and possible tent size next February.

When mine dried out due to missing watering got white buds , could be foxtailing or even light burn , but I would incline ,towards dry or nutrient def , troubleshoot accordingly

10-4, I’ll keep feeding them then.

@oldmarine , Thanks for the video link, that had some great info! They are cutting off large chunks of bud in the video (or it seems large to me). Do you all generally cut off pieces like that to examine the trichomes before harvest, or this just something the author did for scientific purposes (to put them under the microscope and such)? I’ve been trying to take pics while they’re still on the plant, but it’s tough with shaky hands like mine lol.

@Borderryan22 so the white tops don’t necessarily mean I’ve done damage to those buds? That’s a relief, those are my biggest ones on the plants right now!

I’m no expert so I can’t give you an answer on that. Only what I’ve read here and there, but you can ask 5 growers something, and get 5 different answers. I would see what @Stonedrus says about it after reading a couple of his replies. Wish I could help more.

Unfortunately I am not in an area the facilitates testing. They do appear to have thicker trichome stalks and more swollen heads.

@Borderryan22 I got a test kit in the mail a few days ago, but I haven’t done anything with it yet. I initially got it to see how strong the CBD is in the tincture I made from the vegetative leaves I was trimming (to see if it was really worth trying to make tincture during the vegetative state). Do you test the buds a lot while they’re still growing?

It does require a strong base of white light with the supplemental 660nm red added in flower. Also happens in some strains and not so much in others.
