Topped my girl today and damaged a nod. What did I do wrong? Did I damage plant severely? Nod is just limp now.
You gotta post some pics, nobody can help you without them
Literally came off after I made this post
I would say maybe topped too soon, but certainly dont give up on her, the one node you have left i believe can be topped again after several more nodes grow from the one you have left, helpful growers i have got to really appreciate are @Dinky @Incognito @Low @dbrn32 @Lostgirl @Myfriendis410 thats just to name a few of the many, maybe theyll chime in here
And cant forget about @Caligurl
Thank you.
Correction here @OGIncognito
Could lead to early flower if it’s an auto because of stress load. Doesn’t really matter if it’s a photo.
I agree that this looks a little immature to top, but it should recover if kept in reasonable conditions.
I’m personally not a fan of topping because you can create the same plant shape using training methods that don’t typically require as much recovery time. Imo it’s definitely a method that is overly sensationalized and unnecessary. That being said, it’s also very simple when timed properly.
Thanks for the kind words @MikWya. If my input is worth anything my only thought is I hope its a photoperiod, if so then all good, maybe a little early but I see two nodes so, job done.
But @dbrn32 raises a good point, there’s a lot to be said for just a good ol’ spreaddy to the gods, turning one top cola into 8 or more with no damage. If done early a ‘Y’ shape could easily be done.
I still top though, old habits die hard ![]()
Im topping and training and really new to this, ive learned that these plants are increddiby resilient, i can only give advice to finish it the best you can, you’ll be surprised as to what this forum has to offer and what you will learn by not giving up. Your in good hands here my friend.
After falling victim to a few articles and a little hype I had tried this multiple ways. My personal experience led me to the opinion that if i was going to top I would wait until there is at least 5 nodes and reduce to 4. Simply because the recovery time seemed a lot faster. I don’t feel the node count specifically makes a difference, but I do feel like what you have remaining after the topping makes a difference in what happens afterwards. Going from 5 nodes to 4 will have twice as many leaves remaining and probably 20-30% larger root mass. Theoretically the larger plant should process twice as much light energy and move more water and nutrients. This is my logical assumption as to why I thought allowing plants to get a little bigger seemed faster anyway.
Going in completely opposite direction with the conversation, you also have to consider going from a single main cola to 2, 4, 8, or more tops isn’t going to multiply your harvest weight at the same rate. Each time you create a new top is dividing the overall amount of plant energy, so the more tops you have the smaller they will be. What you end up with will be heavily dependent on how the canopy is managed and your individual environmental conditions. If you take something like a 4x4 tent the total yeild potential is roughly the same for that area if you grow 1 really large plant, 16 tiny plants, or anything in-between. The amount of success for each method will depend on how well each grower applies best practices for their particular growing method. Having this in mind is the reason I rarely top a plant. I can simply add a plant or more plants to fill my space faster, which gets the space ready to flower faster, which allows me to bypass some veg time and potentially get an extra grow in every year or two. If your space(s) is running year round but you can get an extra harvest in is a major boost in the efficiency of your grow.
That should be two tops my bad lol and yea big agree Im a 5th node just chopped to 4th guy. After that I just spread and spread until I’ve filled as much of the netting squares as possible. Grow one plant at a time in 3x3
That’s some nice reading @dbrn32
