Height above canopy? Maybe something like that 50% power. Full power with young plants probably start a little higher.

What soil are you using? From the picture it doesn’t look like there’s any vermiculite. My very first attempt I killed 5 seeds even though 2 managed to sprout because I bought these dirt cheap bags of soil from lowes. Switching to root riot and distilled water for early seedlings changed that 2 out of 5 sprout success to 4 out of 5 and the one that didn’t make it never germinated in the first place.

if you want my 2 cents, i think you should get a better light. most people here use HLG quantam board LED lights (pretty expensive). i am just starting out too, and i am using mars hydro TS1000 quantam board LED lights. i did maybe 30 hours research into all sorts of lights and decided on this one because they said it is proven to be “good enough” for weed, and they sell for under $200 USD. it also comes with a dimming feature, so you can dim down the light for seedlings. the light is pretty bright. it is supposed to mimic 1000 watts worth of light, but pulls only 150 watts from the wall, so it wont cost an arm and a leg to run.

also, for germination, instead of using the paper towel method, use solo cups or shot glasses. just put about an ounce of room temp distilled water in the cup, and toss in the seed(s). put the cup in a warm dark place, and check on it every 24 hours. when you see they have sprouted taproots, simply pour the cup out onto a plate with a few paper towels on it. have solo cups of lightly packed soil ready. use a sharpened pencil or an old pen to create a hole in the middle for the seed to go, about a half an inch deep, or deeper if the taproot is exceptionally long. use tweezers to gently grab the sprout and put it into the hole where the seed part would be just under the soil (do not peel off the seed husk) then gently pour one ounce of distilled water directly onto the seed site- this will cover the seed with soil. do the dome thing as others have suggested- let it get fresh air every day. if it is cold, use a warming mat to keep the cup of soil warm. only water it if/when the soil becomes dry. used distilled water only for 2 weeks… then cut the distilled water with your tapwater… kinda wean the plant off distilled water. make sure to get a PH tester and PH up/down kit so you can get your water plant food mix to an ideal PH balance. use only distilled water until you have the other stuff on hand. distilled water should already be ph balanced.

after 2 weeks is up, lose the domes and start feeding nutes. when your plant is about as tall as the cup itself, its time to transplant it to a larger container before it gets root lock. its best to put it in its final container ASAP, transplanting too much is bad for the plant. expect to use at least a 5 gallon container, may need to be larger if it will be a monster plant.

most people here seem to use fox farms soil (expensive)… i am using scotts topsoil blended together with about 20% perlite. it is working for me. im also growing food plants in this. and i am using fox farms soil trio nutes…

also, dont have your fan blowing directly on the plants, the idea is to circulate air. you probably wont need it to be on full blast either. in conjunction with the exhaust fan you already have that should be enough. also, you dont need to use that carbon filter until your plants are flowering and smelly. using it before then just kinds wastes it… another nice tool to have is a hygrometer/ thermometer 2 in one sort of thing. you want to get one that does NOT light up. would share a link to the ones i bought, but i dont think it is allowed… it is “i-power” brand… measures in Celsius and Fahrenheit. it reads temp, and measures humidity, as well as keeps track of the highs and lows of both in a 24 hour period. super handy! and costed about $8 USD on ebay.

thats about all i can think of, that hasnt already been mentioned. cheers!

Some ‘superior potting mix’ I bought from the garden store

Thank you! A lot to read through there and some stuff I don’t understand but I’ll keep this comment flagged for future reference. I’m hoping not to spend any more money on gear for now and work with what I’ve got but will think about getting a better light down the track

All has been going well with my seedling, which I started just over a week ago and moved under my big light about 4 days ago. My soil was drying out completely each time I went to water it so I moved the light a bit further away and also increased my watering a bit. Just now checked how it’s doing and the leaves have started drooping. Could this be a symptom of over watering, under watering or something else?

It can be a symptom of both overwatering and underwatering or even during dark periods they kinda “sleep”. If you water it and you notice a few hours later it perks back up then most likely it was just thirsty.

I’m guessing it’s over-watering rather than under-watering… The soil was still visibly wet when I checked it 10 hours after it’s last water and found it dropping.

what do you need help with?

Yea she’s probably just got wet feet.

Like stated above, they can droop at lights on or just before lights off. No big.

Hello @weetbixguy,
I am a new grower as well and one thing I have learned about this type of pot(I use them as well) is to make sure you make some holes in pots around the sides and bottom for root system to get out.
I am also in AU NE Vic and its winter here as well. challenging for sure
Happy growing

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t made any additional holes in it. It’s just got a single hole in the bottom about the size of a ball point pen. I’ll poke a few others in it cheers

I still need to read up about things like HLG, PH, distilled water, perlite etc because these things aren’t familiar to me already.

I’ve got a few extra things on my to-do list now like getting a PH kit and disconnecting the carbon filter until I have some flowers. Good to have some advise about when to start with nutrients too, I have some but wasn’t sure when to start.

I’ve got a hygrometer/thermometer and a oil heater & dehumidifier inside the tent to help regulate the temp & humidity

Thanks heaps for the help!

HLG is a lighting brand. Horticulture Lighting Group. Boss people…

Ph is a water term… not sure what it stands for. But u want it between 6.3 and 6.8 for soil. 5.8 and 6.3 for hydro:coco.

Distilled water is water with the impurities (metals/nutes/waste) burned off. Around 0 ppms.

Ppms are parts per million. Essentially the amount of solids (nutes) in your solution.

Perlite are little white balls that aid in water retention/drainage for soil. I always add around 25% of it to soil. Helps not overwater.

Any more questions ask away. We are all here to learn

Just a short update incase anyone is interested. I killed another seedling after my last few messages here, but I have finally got the hang of it thanks to everyone’s advice on this thread. I’ve had this one going for a few weeks, I’ve only got one going for now because I was worried I was going to run out of seeds, but it appears to be a healthy female so I’ll see this one through to harvest and then try again with 3 or 4 plants at once. Thanks again all!
