Testing runoff with plants

So i have a question regarding testing runoff. Im getting better at nutrients consistantcy with watering and all. Calculating the correct proportions. Thing is when is it consistant the numbers and all. Whenever im getting runoff a lot of the time its literally all over the place. Do you just get enough runoff to test and go off of that? Cause when i do like a half gallon watering and test the runoff each time its so inconsistant all the time even as im testing runoff 10 times in that single watering.

I let most drain to waste then catch and test the last cup or half cup that comes out but lets check w someb9d6 else to see if thats right

Thing is though isnt that pretty inconsistant? cause the next cup could be 200 or 300 higher ive had that happen so many times

I guess so sounds like it could. Still the last that came out should best represent whats in there.

That makes sense so probably just get like a cupfull of runoff like 16 ounces worth and test the average and go off that thanks i know most people arent this specific

Collecting runoff isn’t meant to be consistent or accurate representation of anything other than determining if your ph and ec are trending up or down from what you’re putting in. I do pretty much the same but use pot holders that have built in collection dish.

I’ll detail my watering. I mix my feed water and adjust according to last waters runoff. I’ll use 3 gallons pots for this. I start by pouring 3 quarts of mixture in slowly, then let them sit 5-10 minutes, pour another 2 quarts in, I’ll get runoff from this, but I let it stop draining thru, then pour one more quart in and catch the last few ounces of that and check numbers. It takes a bit of time, but I feel the sitting gives salts time to soften so they can wash out and catching the last of runoff tells me exactly where my root zone is. So 3gallon pots get total of 1 1/2 gallons per pot, if there’s any apparent buildup in media, I’ll run a bit more thru til my numbers look good. 5 gallon pots get 2 - 2 1/2 gallons.

If it keeps rising as you pour more and more thru, you have some buildup and need more runoff each watering. If it bad out of range, a flush will reset it.

So basically half that makes sense, so 2 gallon pot would be 1 gallon makes sense and yeah i was thinking of that beforr softens the salts up and helps wash them out to represent a good watwring. Thank you very much.

That occured to me before especially when a plant isnt as big as a pot or dosent fill it completely feel like more salts build and isnt collected as much by the plant.
