Runoff -- properly testing -- make it easy, please

I’m way behind the curve on testing runoff. Please, tell me there is an easy-to-understand video, chart, explanation. I’ve read posts here, but I’m in a haze of misunderstanding.

Indoor, White Widow autos, Homegrown Standard nutes 1x per week at 50%. Half full flower, half pre-flower. Plants seem happy. So @CurrDogg420 @Highwayman420 @Retiredoldguy am I overstressing again? I need a 101 explanation I can wrap my head around.

I think these two are a good place to start

It takes a bit to get to runoff and checking soil pH.

@GrnyGrows i take my plant and run ph water through them until i get some water runoff the bottom of my pot. Then i collect it with a little cup and then test. Slowy add water like a gal or even half gal at a time till use see run offf it should be a little lower then what you mix and feed your girls. Hope this help alittle. Happy growing. Dont stress. Less is more never over think it. Take your time and let the plant talk to you it will tell you what it needs. But the video above can help.

That has never been the case for me. This morning, in coco, fed 8 liters. runoff 3.2 liters, ppm in 1050 (Jack’s) ppm out 1840. The plant is 31 days from flip. It has been this way from the beginning. Strange but the numbers are very consistent for previous three grows. I try to bring it down but it bounces right back.

Hey Granny
Im a new guy here. Some of the knowledgeable people here have shared some stuff to help you. Read everything until you understand all of it. It takes time, but youll get it. Once you do your confidence will grow, and your plants !!
Everyone here is awesome !! Ive got 2 very nice Black Widows going because of them !!

What do u run in soil or coco @GrnyGrows ph is high for both ideal range is 6.5- 6.8 ph soil. coco 5.5 -6.3 ph ideal 5.5- 5.8 ph Cannabis enjoys 500-600 ppm after cloning, 800-900 ppm when vegetating, and 1000-1100 ppm when flowering .

What are you feeding them? Srry @GrnyGrows i see u where low at 6.25 i like to be at 6.5 lowest 6.4 @GrnyGrows they look good just stay doing what your doing just keep your light dialed in and make sure you just keep that soil moisture dial in as well.

@GrnyGrows I am not so sure that measuring the runoff water PH does you much good. I think you need a soil PH meter if you are really concerned about this. Maybe @CurrDogg420 has done this since he is a soil grower. Plants are looking god and getting there.

When I used soil the difference was even more between the in and out. The only time is was close was after a major flush. When I switched to coco I expected them to be much closer. But, what can I say. It hasn’t happened. And, I have not killed them.

@GrnyGrows

remember PPM is a measurement of anything in your water, so when measuring the runoff it may contain other things besides the water and nutrients, like tiny soil particles for instance so again measuring this runoff ppm really is not going to do a lot for you in my opinion…I know you and I both like the KISS methods and so I give you another saying I like to use…Everything matters but NOT everything matters…get it?

Yea 1000 ways to the same finish line. But if what is working dont fix it if it not broken. And you doing good @GrnyGrows

@GrnyGrows, I don’t water to runoff at all.

But, you’re looking great! If you’re following the directions for the nutes I’d just keep doing what you’re doing for now.

I think this is where a lot of folks get into trouble. What happens when the soil you started in becomes depleted.

Most people will begin feeding the plant with the bottles. In this case, they can/are providing for all of the nutrition for the plant, and you don’t really need or want the soil to do anything except act as a substrate.

And so it’s best to treat it that way. In a hydro grow you must always water with enough runoff to wash out any accumulated mineral salts (think hard water stains). In order to monitor for this it’s important to check the ppm and ph of your runoff. Though the results can be misleading from a soil, as @Retiredoldguy said.

The alternative is, you get it done with the soil, like ma nature. You can feed the soil, and keep it healthy and alive and then just water the plant. The soil can produce all those same NPK goodies all by itself and more.

I don’t know what kind of nutrient system the homegrown one is. Looks like it’s working! Sorry for the sales pitch,

@beardless I’m going through the same issue. Had issues so I flushed and drew PPM way down. Now its right back up towards where it was again. 940 in, 1500ish out. But, PH is much better and they look much happier. Just gonna ride it out and leave it be.

Oh, I’ve had my Sunday morning chuckle. My plants look great, smell great, are growing. I hate breaking good stuff. Gotta let the girls just talk to me.

I’m good with all sales pitches. I constantly ask why and overthink. The Standard nutes seem to do it all. I want to stay the course… as I feel like my gals are happy. I feed 50% of recommended 1x a week.
I’m using the two on the right now – Flowertime and Plant Booster

I’m with you. Too much is often too much. I’m a worrier though, just ask @Retiredoldguy, he’ll tell ya.
