As short as I can make this without writing a book. My dad (84) has had 2 strokes. I have him moved up here to a Care facility with therapy. His primary physician will not condone medical MJ due to “insufficient scientific proof of helping or hindering”. He cannot speak much, but was walking (with assistance) about 100 feet. I gave him some of my edibles I made, but NOW he’s SO relaxed he will NOT walk (or maybe can’t?) Due to him not walking he has developed bed sores (which they are treating). When I gave him an edible, he nearly immediately began to speak… So which is it? The lady or the tiger? Mental or physical? Comfortable vs. improvement (physically) ? Has anyone faced this? Thank you.
Sorry for your struggle. It’s hard on everyone with a parent in that state. I work in physical therapy and focus on Neuro. There is no correct answer here.
I would want comfort after substantial Los of function and Neuro pain. But bed soars are the opposite.
I’ve had patients do phenomenally with cannabis, and I’ve had some it destroyed with apathy and contentment.
Try sativa specifically?
Just a couple of year ago I went through the same thing with my Grandmother and I kept her comfortable was not easy at all
I do feel for you. My Dad had a stroke many years ago. There were no alternatives back then for treatment. Best wishes to you.
alvino83 Yeah… that’s the decision I have to make.
OK, I’ll switch to Sativa and try - thank you… I was afraid there was no correct answer. It’s a horrific mind struggle - this decision.
Support and love is the best you can do. Thoughts are with you
No right answer there, but if he is able to communicate, maybe a lower dose would help enough, but not hinder physical movements as much.
Dosing is one of the challenges cannabis faces for medically usage, because not only is everyone’s chemistry different, but if the person isn’t able to communicate properly “how much” it’s all guess work.
Edibles are the best way to treat medically, however there are hotspots in some edibles that make it difficult to dose.
Gummy’s I have found to be more precise for dosing. Not only are they uniform in size, but when making them, the resin is very evenly distributed throughout.
My prayers go out to your family for recovery. My uncle suffered a stroke, but is anti cannabis, and his recovery has taken years. It’s a long journey.
Covertgrower - He is also anti-cannabis BUT he was always afraid ‘someone’ would pull his blood for something, then the whole town would ‘know’. lol It’s a lot of guesswork, but my daughter did go to the dispensary and gave him what was labeled as 50 mg. Is that high for a first time user? I have no idea… my job is to grow. I did, however, order the Source Turbo and have someone lined up to teach me the edibles/vape process. I have made gummies though. When she gave him the 50 mg, he did begin to talk - sativa - his eyes brightened and he knew me. So maybe yes, a lower dosage. Also I have a facetime conference with Kind Way in an hour to get his medical card… so I had better get movin’ lol
I have a meeting with the therapy guy this morning to see if he has any hope for recovery… thank you for your prayers, and I do believe in miracles.
You weren’t specific if they were home edibles or dispensary. Those are measured amounts, and fairly exact. You should be okay with those. 50mg is probably a decent amount, but really have no idea because I’ve never had my flower sent for analysis.
Myfriendis410 has a source turbo and loves it. He could tell you anything about it, and he does journal it’s usage.
Much more precise means of dosing yourself using alcohol extraction and the Source.
By mentioning dispensary made me wonder if you have regular access? If so, most have a whole range of products that may open up some middle of the road doors for you. Like a full spectrum cbd, or 1:1 ratio of cbd/thc. Its great to look for things that helped others, but everyone is a little different, and you won’t know for sure until you try.
Controlling doses is a good idea. I would not exceed a 10mg dose of thc for beginner, especially if it’s something he is concerned about. A sativa may be the answer, but it may also cause him some paranoia. In his state paranoia may make him less willing to experiment further.
Bottom line this is a marathon talking a centimeter step at a time. My wife had a stroke 6 yrs ago and she suffers with pain. She couldn’t even sit up in bed without falling over when it first happened. Now, she walks with a brace and cane short distances, operates a power chair, does her own makeup, and on and on…. Huge improvement with much more to go. Biggest thing is keep moving. Keep trying new stuff to relearn. We’ve found a butt load of work arounds to help ‘life’.
We discussed med cannabis with her Dr to reduce and limit opioid use. He encouraged doing anything we can to help.
dbrn32 - Yes I have access to dispensaries, and have edibles 100mg (which I’m cutting in 1/4) Sativa. They were were out of Indica hybrid sublinguals. I’m keeping a journal now of times administered and not using until AFTER his therapy sessions.
Covertgrower - thank you so much! I may contact him - my Source Turbo just arrived last evening.
