Hi all, new poster here. I want to use this as a journel and look forward to some good conversation and senior advice here and there. I am an amateur to say the least. I grew a plant from bag seed in 2020 with some success. Nugs were popcorny and it hermied a little but was fun and addicting!
On my 2nd grow using bag seeds from good weed grown in cali. All I know for sure.
Upgraded lighting from a 1000w blurple to a Famurs SF 2000 LED. Thinking of adding the blurple to tent during flower.
Upgraded from small coat closet to a 2x4 tent.
Have 5 seedlings in jiffy peat pots and seedling mix cut and fit into red cups.
Have 3 gallon fabric pots to transplant into, ffof soil, and the 3 basic ff nutes leftover from previous grow.
5 plants in 2x4 we shall see haha. More likely will only fit 2-4 flowering if all goes well.
Plan is to scrog them, but we’ll see what happens.
Heres to hoping my plants are female and dont hermie!
Stealth closet tent
Peat pots in red cups. Anyone do this before? I was thinking the peat pots dry out too quickly. I did cut holes in bottoms of cups to drain excess but hoping to contain some water.
nice set up. i am set to watch.
1st tiny feeding of 1/8 strenth ff big bloom with britta balanced to pH 6ish (using PH dropper+shake r color test technique). My Britta Tap is closer 7.5/8 and have been feeding them that before now. 2 seedlings on left dont seem to be doing as well. Pulled light back from 27 to 32" see if it helps but I only have space for 3 girls anyway.
Slow going but I realized yesterday lights were on 24h and may be why slow growth and why pots were always dry lol. Reset the hygrometer to see what min/max is and will check tonight to confirm lights go off.
Stupid me/timers “auto on” or “on” whatever dummy me figured it out lol.
Here are some pics from my first grow. Did some LST and got 6 good colas, so I was doing something right. The weak blurple light made for waaay too much stretch during flower and loose fluffly buds. They smoked ok but didnt last long haha. I learned some lessons and really enjoyed it.
Down to 4 now. I pulled the weakest one that looked half dead. Will end up with 3 in here. 1st set of real leaves showing nute burn i guess from too strong fox farm big bloom? Thought i mixed 1/2 teaspoon with a quart of pH 6.5 water. Diluted that same mix for subseuent waterings and 2nd set of leaves look good. Watering 2/3x a week maybe too much but containers seem dry. Not thrilled with these peat pots.
Ok I transplanted a bit early but felt the need. Leaves were drooping. I’m not sure if they were unhappy with the soil, pots, or water. 3 is already a crowd in this 2x4. Tried to pick 3 seedlings with different leaves, though its difficult to distinguish at this state. Roots were showing thru the peat pots a bit, mostly at the hole in the bottom and where i cut them vertically. Got them good and wet last night to soften the peat. Soil had good moisture in the bag so I didnt add any when i set them in.
3 gallon fabric pots on neat little stands with wheels and a catch for runnoff. FFOF soil.
Hopefully they react well and start going.
Put the 4th one in a pot. Who knows, it might be The One, lol. Removed the bottom of the peat pots so no more restrictions. Roots look good. Crowded but happy. Should see some nice growth this week.
Update. Been a week of slow growth but they seem to be bouncing back. Last week i used scissors to cut away the peat pots. Those things suck. I previously removed the bottoms so the sides came right out.
Bottom right plant dropped its first set of serrated leaves so it only has one set now, but looking good. Top right plant is more yellow than the others, but overall looking better. Close up of bottom left. Finally the leaves are straightening out!
@Stickyicky407 you know those peat pots are meant to fall apart and melt into your soil and they should not be stopping your roots from growing thru them if you have maintained the right moisture level…your pictures show a dry top soil which could mean heat from your lights is drying out the top too quickly…just an observation from your pictures
Thank you @Retiredoldguy. Theres not a ton of heat from the lights. Temps in low 70s, but i do have a fan above my lights pointing down, so maybe some heated air is hitting the soil. Last watered on 3/2 so it is due again. I agree, the pots should do what you say and thats why I started with them. They seem like a good thing and very easy to transplant. But, after some observations, I felt the peat pots were drying out too fast on their own, so I put them in solo cups to hold a little more. When transplanted i felt they were staying too wet in the soil, and i want the roots to grow in search for water. I couldnt find a happy medium with them. I didnt have any roots growing thru them except the hole at the bottom, so I removed the bottoms a week ago. I felt they were still constricting the roots and holding too much moisture so i cut them out completely 4 days ago. Its been about 30 days with them, and I just dont like them.
Maybe I got it wrong and they work well for others. Just not my cup of tea.
@Stickyicky407 you are correct in knowing what works for one may not work for you and visaversa…we each find our own way and it works for us but maybe no one else…a trick I used when I grew in dirt was to get some UV window screen material from the hardware store and cut a piece to cover the pot top…this stop some heat from the light hitting the top soil and it allows the soil to breathe at the same time…at that time I had HPS lights
Looks like they’re finally getting happy. I watered yesterday morning and they are looking better by the hour.
It’s hard to tell at this point if they’re all different or the same. They all have slightly different leaves.
All got 16oz of britta water pH adjusted to 6.5 this morning. Last watering was 6/9. Used a solo cup to cover the plants while watering, and used a sprayer for better absorption. I believe these are 30 days old now so its about time they get going.
DLI at 23 with 18hr day period.
Ladies were thirsty today, and they showed it. They were also getting too warm upstairs. Temps in the mid-upper 80s in the tent yesterday. Moved everything to the basement today and gave them all their first taste of FF Grow Big. So far the temp hasnt gotten above 75 in the tent. Gotta get an inline fan soon. This little USB fan is ok for now but I’ll need some real circulation soon enough.
Looks like they enjoyed the move downstairs and a good feed/drink. Today I fimmed (I think) the big one, and bent over the sativa looking one. I might keep the other two alone. We will see. All good for now.
Let me know if these things look ok. Maybe a slight cal deficiency? Gonna start using calmag soon.
Cal-Mag came yesterday!
This morning I mixed up a gallon of britta water with 2 Tbs big bloom, 2 tsp grow big, and 1 tsp cal mag. PH at 6.6 after nutes, so I did not adjust. Good enough for me. Each plant got a quart.
A couple days ago I did some work on them to keep them squat. LST and FIMed the “big” plant, LST and topped the “sativa”, and FIMed the two shortys. I can see I’ll have to keep up with the LST.
I think they’re looking good. They’re all a bit light in color and bottom leaves yellowing, so I’m hoping the cal-mag puts a stop to that. I don’t think it can reverse the damage done, but it should stop it from continuing. We shall see.
