This is the second time I try to germinate and the seeds seem to be duds. I started my first grow on December 20 with 4 seeds and only got one to pop. I went straight into the soil and thought maybe thats where my problem was. I start 5 new seeds on the 31 by soaking them. Yesterday was two days in the water and no taproot. I decided to remove from water and leave in a wet paper towel overnight, I woke up this morning and still no taproot. Is this normal? Seems like I’m doing everything by the book and still not getting the results I want.
What is the temperature where you have your seeds in the paper towels? It should be around 75 F.
@Covertgrower or @Holmes can correct me on the temperature if I got it wrong. LOL
My old guy brain slips now and again.
Where did you get your seeds? Are they regular, feminized or auto-flower?
Most of my seeds came from ILGM and only two or three have not cracked (out of about 50 attempts) and two of those failures were my fault.
I’m with @merlin44 on this one. Whats the Temps? I soak for 24hr and straight into soil. Usually within 5 days i have a sprout.
After 24 hours in a cup of room temperature water I go to the paper towels method. Seeds between a couple of paper towels damp but not standing in water. Clamshell between two saucers. Check to make sure they stay damp you may need to dribble a little water on towels couple days I usually have Sprouts. Just my thoughts good luck
75-80 should be ideal, sometime they are a little stubborn and our patience short!
Its 77°F in the room I had them. Then I moved them to my fireplace room which is warmer for sure. I still have the soaking but don’t see anything yet
I had some issues until I started using a capful of peroxide in with my soaking water. 1/2 cup of water, 1 capful of peroxide, soak for 24 hrs and then into paper tower soaked with the same water mix. In 48 hrs. my taproots are 1/4 to 3/8 inch long. So far not a single failure since I started using the H2O2.
Also its a gold leaf auto.
I aim for 80° for germination, even the stubborn ones enjoy that temp. Seedling heater mat, buffered by a piece of cardboard will be just about right, depending on ambient temperatures.
Thanks for the correction…and for chiming in.
I know everyone has there own way. But when I was having problems with my seeds popping I put a heat mat under the tray. And used plain peat discs. I turned my lights down low and put a thin white towel over the tray to keep them in a dim environment. I didn’t allow direct light. I let the sides of the humidity tray be open to diffused light I had an immediate improvement.
You have received lots of good info here from the crew, one thing not explained is soaking for to long can drowned the seedling.
So to summerize, as this is all important
Warm dark area
Soak hydrogen peroxide/water mix for 20hr
Place seeds in a Tupperware container with damp paper towel, ensure seed is not going to drowned. Oh and still in a dark warm place.
Thanks everyone. I guess I’m back to square one since these seeds aren’t popping. Imma try the peroxide next see if I get different results.
When you use peat discs, do you need to remove the mesh that holds it together? My one seed that popped is in the disc with the mesh
