Hey guys. Questions about if this is popped enough to go into soil or should I wait a little longer. I am getting antsy to get them going. Just want to know if I need to be a little more patient. I put them in water to soak on Friday evening. Thanks for the help
Most people wait until it has a tail coming out. Some people put them straight into the pot they growing in, and I soak mine for 24hrs then put in the ground!! If you wait until it has a tail then you know you have germination!!
I have always planted straight into the soil or peat pellet, and never not had one germinate. Try germinating a few different ways if you want, and see what works best. I put a pencil eraser depth hole in medium. Drop seed, and cover gently with medium. My White Widow females sprout from soil within 3 to 4 days
I do straight into soil, top with humidity dome made out of 20oz soda bottles, had babies 3 to 5 days later.
14/15 popped last year, 1 oddball was my fault since soil was too wet.
+1 for WW
I should say, if you’re not germinating in your grow space and even if you are. Might consider a heat pad to put underneath the germinating seeds. I only used once. When i was germinating in solo cups on window shelf.
Typically want about 1/4" tap root showing. Roots don’t like bright light either so careful with that. I soak at least 24 hours. At that point I usually get the tap root showing. These look close but not yet.
- Put a few ounces of water in a glass with a small splash of hydrogen peroxide.
- Soak seeds for 24 hours. Place the water on top of a cable box or something to keep it warm but not hot. You can soak for longer, but risk drowning the seed. It still needs oxygen.
- When the seed cracks, you can put in between two plates on damp paper towel. (Put seeds on the rim and not in the center with water. EASY to let dry out so you need to make sure it stays moist.)
- When you have the 1/4 inch tap root plant in a solid color Solo cup or etc. (Not a clear cup).
- Transplant to 5 gal fabric pot as forever home.
I don’t use the plate method myself since it is so easy to dry it out and kill the tap root. I also try not to soak longer then 24 hours if I can avoid it.
Good luck
@jscherencel @Reticence howdy. i agree with what reticence said but make sure you put holes in solo cups, and put in clear solo cup and then put that in another colored solo cup so you can take the clear one out of colored one and inspect for roots.
Good catch @monkman. Forgot the holes for drainage.
Curing is usually a question too. A lot of info on it, but some do get confused including me at first. I made up a fool proof solution to know how moist my buds were so I could jar with confidence.
Check out this string @jscherencel and see if it is of interest to you. I still use these lids with the hygrometer in them. Battery life is great and once you are stable at ~62 % pop in a Boveda pack and call it good.
Not sure if other do this but I also store in 2 quart jars after a couple of months with oxygen remover packs vacuum sealed in with a Boveda pack. (62%)
Quick question about seeds as well. I didn’t plant all of them cause I want to focus on the seeds I have. Where can I store the seeds while I am not using them so they are good for the next plant?
Typically in a packet in a cool (not cold) dark, dry area without much temperature fluctuation works best. Somewhere critters can’t get to them as well, some use a ‘seed keeper’ or similar plastic container for sorting & storing seeds of all kinds.
