Have any of you grown shitake, reishi, turkey tail, or any of the other beneficial mushrooms? Difficult to grow? Grow media tips,…?

Ive had moderate success plugging logs for shitake. A definite practice in patience here in MN lol! I used plugs from NorthSpore that were already inoculated and fresh cut hardwood logs about 4’ long and 6" in diameter.
Simple process- drill holes and tap in plugs. I used melted beeswax to cover each plug after insertion. I stacked them on a pallet along the north facing side of our home and let them do their thing.
I also have a couple of buried logs that were inoculated with hen of the woods several years ago. I hold out hope one of these years but I think they lost the battle for supremacy.

I havent had a successful tub yet so that would be really nice if it was. I lost half my bags to contamination so fingers are crossed you are right.

Side note. Definitely finding a new more sterile room to do this in next time around. I tried the basement so all my grow stuff was together but doesnt seem to be working out great when i have a 50% success rate ya know? Lol

So.. i went to lift the lid on my tub and some water spilled onto a decent sized corner of the tub. Best and worst case scenarios? Its only like maybe 15-20% colonized surface level but from the side its looking like its almost 60-70% colonized inside.if pics are needed illl go back downstairs

As long as your lid is clean and somewhat sterile, it shouldn’t cause contamination. It may have drown some mycelium where the water pooled and hopefully thats all. If it happens again, the tip or edge of clean paper towel can be used to gently pull up some of the pooled water on top of the mycelium. Dont wipe, just stick the edge in the water and let the paper towel absorb.

Yeah i was doing night maintenance with my green light so it looked like a shadow to me then i felt the weight and the water pivot and was like fml of course. Why not right? Lol.

But yeah it shsould be sterile i sprayed everything down with 70% iso and havent seen any contamination (thank god) so far. So thats a good sign if you ask me. I can handle a small drowning(that sounds horrible typing it out) but not contamination again. God anything but that

Definitely keep me updated! Love seeing other mycologists and jr mycologists work! Helps me in ways to see what people do and how they do it.

Really excited for the tubs. I got 1/2 oz from a 3lb fruiting block for my very first try. Ive had a couple others that havent produced anything though so im trying to figure out what works best for me ya know? I think tubs if i get a good enough yield and can keep contamination low.

So my one tub hardly shows colonization on the side but has a abuttload more on top. And vice versa for the other. Is there a reason for this? And does it mean anything in particular like possibly not mixing thuroughly enough or something?

(Sorry for always posting like bi-daily. Lol. Just so much to share and learn.
