Im back with another question. Ive done my do diligence in research, but its seems like its a safe yet preference thing. .y flower is at 13.2 to 11.9 moisture content. Stems dont snap but bend and crease if that makes sense. My question is , is that a safe range to pick and jar flower or shoukd it be lower. Its only been 5 days in dry temps ranged from 68 to 64 degrees rh 60 to 65. Its not a large harvest maybe will get a 24 to 30 grams. I was always told 7 to 10 days for it to dry and thc to become active but at the 7 to 8 day mark my flower seem really dry. Definitely dont want to jar to early but dont want to over dry either. If i probe flower and dont squeeze its in the range indicated above ,but if i squeeze it will jump to 13.9 to 12.4
How are you determining moisture content? The old weigh/dry out/weigh again method?
Drying doesn’t activate thc…the thc is there regardless. When we smoke it’s the heat from combustion that serves as the catlyst to activate the bulk of the thc in the flower. There are other ways to do this as well…like decarboxylation (required for edibles).
I don’t test moisture content per sey before curing…i just kinda know when they are dry enough. For me thats usually a little before the smallish (not smallest) stems snap…when a lot of stems are snapping i actually find it a little dry for a good cure personally.
If you do jar and they are a little too wet simply open the lid…or take the flowers out to dry for a bit a couple times a day…monitor and repeat.
Obviously you need hygrometers in the jars to monitor the environment. This process is called “sweating” your buds and helps migrate moisture from the inside of the flower to the outside.
Im using a wood moisture meter. I only took down a few branches. Jar is holding at 60 rh been about 45 min.
@Bluedream1 you want 11% on a wood meter, that will work out to 60-62% rh once in the jar.
Have then in there.
I’ve said this many times before on the process I do for drying and curing.
I wash my weed so it it is a little different from most.
After I wash upside down couple of days in my room two fans going window open make sure the humidity is in its 60 temperature about 65 no higher. After the water drips away and it’s a lot drier I use a wedryer. I cannot stress how great this drying tool mechanism machine whatever you want to call it does. Wedryer is the savior to my bud curing needs then I have a few Auto burping buckets with boveda packs. Then some of it goes into Grove bags.
The wedryer is worth $100 for the XL once you try it out I believe you will be hooked on phonics LOL
Good luck
PS some people hate this drying system
I wish I could get all of mine to read the same like that!!
On the wedryer, How is tempurature controlled in it? And what’s its capacity?
Temperature control is whatever the ambient temperature in the room is there is no temperature control. Only what looks like is a small computer fan sucking air in and blowing out through a little carbon filter thingy that’s kind of useless the amount of weed you could put in that thing it will still smell like weed.
How much it holds depends stems and everything I’m going to be buying another one in from me two of those should be able to hold almost 3 lb of moist weed.
As the air flows through you don’t want to pack it too much or doesn’t work properly. The bottom layers usually get the air quicker than the top so those dry a little quicker.
For $100 it’s well worth it the xl wedryer. I just looked them up it’s $140. I don’t know if I got it when it was on sale or from years ago the price went up probably the second.
A lot of people would agree the drying caring process is not just letting your weed dry. Everybody has their own little methods I live in New England so I leave the windows open and it’s not too humid. Looking at my gauges right now I’m 49% humidity in the room I’m in and in my grow tent is 74 the bottom is saying and the top is saying 78. On rainy days like today the humidity is a little higher but we’re getting an inch or two rain for the day
While the weed dryer is hanging I also have two circulating fans in the room
Advertisment picture.
Mine read the same, only in batches of purchase.
Sets can be -5 to +5 in measuring.
shown sensor from batch all read -5RH (tape marking on backside.
Like I said there’s a lot of people who would dry their weed differently. Here’s one.
By the time you’re clipping all those buds on there though I already filled up the wedryer. It’s very efficient the wedryer and works great.
Yeah, I’ve had some esxperience with +, - 5 out of batch sets. I have a couple stray that are 20some points off. They increase and decrease at the same rate as ones reading correctly so I still use em.
If that jar is in your way at all, just let me know. I can gladly take it off your hands.
Ahh, ok. I have a similar, less expensive drying rack, used it back when I was first learning, stuff was drying too fast. Maybe I’ll have to break it out again now that I’m a little less of a novice.
I shoot for rH/temp at 60/60. If I keep it there and hang my ladies whole, I reach 7 - 8 days drying time and after trimming, I’m jarring at 62 - 66% rH. Problem is, my lung room/bedroom gets a little on the cold side for sleeping during drying times. It’s not the sleeping part, it’s the getting out from under the covers part that’s a @#$%^ !! And when I wind up with a staggard harvest, cold nights stretch on for weeks.
I’ve seen a couple nice home made devices with old refrigerators that could work but capacity can be limited.
Looks like I’m going to wind up rigging up a closet with a portable AC unit or the AC unit ducted to one or more tents at a time. I’ve seen some nice examples posted here.
I also use boveda packs large ones in each buckets after auto burping. Large grove bags with boveda pack for the weed that I’m going to grab in the next couple of weeks. So once they’re cured I leave them in my buckets but I’ll put a couple of ounces in a couple of different Grove bags different strains for ready grab and smoke.
I love those boveda packs, some people hate them. Why cuz they say the flavor and blah blah blah bunch of different things I like it myself. By no means is my stuff always perfect but I’ve never had a problem but I’m also in New England looking at my humidity in my house right now is 50% but it also rained a few inches today it’s usually in the 40s LOL
I’ve been lucky on always keeping good ventilation in my tent and on a daily I can change up ventilation good luck
Using an AC brings up more electricity cost I like growing from fall to spring.
Watch the boveda packs… I stopped using them after one pack leaked.
Wasn’t punctured, nor crushed… It just seeped out from the edge…I was very upset.
If you dry to 10-12% moisture it’ll come out to 58-62%rh with a hygrometer in a grove bag.
I use a hay moisture meter as it’s probes are longer so I don’t crush the buds when checking the moisture with the little ones on the wood meters.
Heat seal the grove bag, if you have the ability, as it is part of the technology… Then let them sit for at least a month.
Works perfectly every time.
I do put mine in a sandwich bag, not 100% leak proof but I read that a while ago my buddy was telling me in his cigars.
I don’t care what’s inside that pack I don’t want that on my weed.
