Patch's New Garden

That is the way I understand it too. But I figured from aspect of support ticket and lot number tracking too. I cannot speak for what is done at seed shop. But I would handle a random seed not germinating differently than reports of entire packs not germinating.

i wonder if this is why i have had some problems with the germ/seedling stage in my last couple of grows. the germ/seedling stage was the only thing i excelled at in my first grow or two. i think on my first couple of grows that i would plant the seeds as soon as they ā€œcrackedā€. for the last couple of grows i have been letting the tail get an eighth of an inch to a quarter inch long. thanks for the heads up @kaptain3d i will try back to just cracked when i plant my gdp when i get them in in a week or so.

and yes, in first two grows i had 100% germ and the last couple grows i have struggled a bunch and didn’t remember that i had done it differently in the first couple.

I started doing it that way on one of these great guy’s recommendation… @shindig153 or @Chasfitter , might even be someone else…(I’m seriously baked rn…)
Point is: I learned it here in ILGM!

Kaptain-
I decided to do a combination of germination methods. As soon as they sank I put them in damp paper towels and they are in between two plates. When they have bootys I will plant them. Sorry for the misquote, no feelings hurt. I believe my first harvest of blueberry is getting more potent with age. Have a good one Kaptain. Peace…

Just make sure to journal your methods, that way you’ll be able to pinpoint what works for you and what you feel comfortable to do! And we get to learn with you!

:peace_symbol: and :love_you_gesture: always my friend!

Hey Patch, sorry I’m late to the party. I’ve found that my best ā€œdon’t kill the seedlingā€ rate is when I soak in a glass of water until the seed at least cracks open or sometimes gets a little tail overnight, then into the moist paper towel in between plates for several days until those roots are a couple cms long. Most of the time, her helmet has popped off by the time I plant her. Very carefully plant I to pot with cotys more or less level with the soil medium and just barely tucked into the soil (ie not compacted down). Then I mist the soil to make sure no bits of potting mix or perlite are sitting ontop of her and let her go for several days before I touch them again.
By that night they’re usually around 2cms tall out of the soil.
Since I’ve started doing this I’ve had not only 100% success germ rate as promised by ILGM, but I also have killed any babies either (which we all know I excel at)

Oh I also add some Great White, DE, and BITS to the soil to help root growth and because I’m now paranoid about bugs lol

BStarr-
Thank you for chiming in! No apologies needed for me. I cannot keep up with everyone’s journals because there are so many great ones out there and the people that put them up are good people. I mentioned somewhere earlier today that I actually went with the method you described above. I was 100% with germination until this time. I tried a different method and it didn’t work. I think these next two will be fine. They sank in their water and this morning went into paper towels between the plates. I guess great minds think alike (yours anyway). Have a great weekend, and I will be updating and putting up pics when the girls come up to play!!! Peace…

Hey mate that’s cool. Sorry it didn’t work this time round. I wonder what’s different? Did you end up digging them up yet? I lost some to root maggots (fungus gnats) at one stage. That’s not what happened to yours at all? Sorry, I love a good mystery lol

Hopefully the next couple come good for you.

Well I am not really sure what happened. The White Widow cbd seed was pretty much like it was when I planted it, minus the tail. I couldn’t find the bb seed. I saw no evidence of bugs, so it may just be another head scratcher. I wanted to use the germination method that ILGM recommends so if there is a problem I can get replacement seeds. Sometimes its better to go with what you know I guess. I will check on the seeds in the morning and update with pictures when the girls come out to play. Have a great weekend BStarr! Peace…

Hmmm that is odd. I’m still going with my conspiracy theory that it was root maggots and they STOLE the seeds - or contents thereof

Cheers bro - you too! It’s Saturday evening here… time to head out!:clinking_glasses:

Good morning/evening brothers and sisters! Mothers and Daughters! Fathers and Sons! And all of our furry friends! Well I went to the closet to check on my germinating seeds this morning. This is what I found.

The White Widow CBD had some ā€œjunk comin’ out the trunkā€ so she got planted. I carefully made about a little less than a 1/2 inch indentation in the soil and put her in it.

I put her in tail side down and put some myco in. Then I took a tooth pick and gently covered her with soil. A couple of mistings from my spray bottle, and domed her so I wouldn’t lose any moisture. She is under my T5 seedling light for now.

Nothing from the Blueberry yet. Even though I had them in wet paper towels in between two plates the paper towels did dry a little around the edges. I am going to make sure that the soil stays moist, not wet, by spritzing it a couple of times. We will see how this one goes. Good luck to all of you with your gardens out there. As is always the case on my journals, please feel free to leave comments, advice, etc., just don’t be too brutal. I always miss people I would like to invite to watch along. My apologies to @blackthumbbetty, I very much value your opinion, and want you in my corner. I am a natural (organic) grower on my second try. Everybody have a great day. Peace…

The only reason you soak em is to ensure that water actually gets inside the seed… once thats done the seed will do one of 3 things and it doesnt matter if you paper towel it or plant direct to pre moistened soil. Those 3 things are… nothing, rot, and germinate.
Placing seeds in paper towel only serves to give a visual ID on the fact that it has a tap root. It elevates the risk of damage to that root. Myself personally, I will soak seed, especially older seed with harder shells, overnight and then plant directly to soil. I do not attempt to orient the seed in any particular direction. Just make a 1/4 hole with a pencil and dropper in there… cover the hole and be patient. Ifbyou have pre moistened the soil there is no need to water itbas you have already gotten water into the embryo.

Thank you for succinctly putting that into words. Any first (second, third, etc.) timer trying to germinate needs to hear exactly this.

If I ever write a book, I’m totally stealing this.

Well its kinda funny how germinating seed has been made into a complicated science? I grow micro greens using about 10 different types of vegitable seed. The process is really simple… for large or woody seed you pre soak em, for small seed you simply spread em out… spray with water and stack the planters on top of each other. In 3 days they are chocked full of sprouts! Sure some dont germinate, but you dont want weak genetics anyway! So in short, germination is pretty un complicated, get water into embryo and thats basically it! Give the tap root a place to gravitate and the seed will be just fine or not. Thats it… no magic! There are some instances, primarily when dealing with super old bag seed or badly stored seed, that you need to help that water get in or maybe add some gibberelin… can remember how to spell that… anyway its a rooting hormone that can stimulate germination. Things like rolling up 130 grit sand paper into a pencil sized tube and shaking your seed in it for a while can scarify the shell and make water penetration a bit easier too. I would not recommend that with good seed though.

Thanks Cannabian. I remember back in the old days we would just plant them and water. And growing has changed into a huge science project. I never was good in chemistry. I very much like the natural way to grow. Nature has been doing this for a very long time. So if I can get my soil to imitate natural soil, I am putting myself in a position to be successful. Thanks for the info Cannabian, and for Oly for stopping by! Peace…

@Hellraiser-
Hey I wanted to let you know that I just couldn’t give up on my Pax 2.
Thats the good thing about being stubborn, you dont quit on anything.
However, there’s a fine line between stubborn and stupid, wouldn’t you agree? So, I started trying different things. I will say that I can now almost see the vapor come out when I exhale. No clouds or anything close, but it is getting me higher that Bob Marley. And I would call that a win. Not very showy, but who needs showy when you are most toasted!!! Thank you for your input, the packing helps a lot. Have a good weekend, peace…

Hey no problem… with the exception of super old seed, any seed that doesnt germinate in 10 days or less is generally not considered viable seed. Even if it manages to sprout, it has a poor start. I lije my seed to jump oit of that shell in a vigorous way! If it does this you can be sure it will grow fast and furious.

Ah sorry, Patch - I thought I had this set to watch…turns out I did not :expressionless:
I’m all caught up now.
C’mon little babies, you can do it!

Good morning friends!
Checked on everything this morning and Majesty (the White Widow CBD) has not come up to play. Juicy, my blueberry has no junk in the trunk either. So we wait a little longer. Have a great day everybody, peace…
