Opinions on removing the hull off the seedling

Does she need this struggle to grow strong like how the wind makes stems strong or does this burn energy and by removing it youre helping her ? Noob alert

Noob alerts always allowed. I am sure more talented growers will chime in with suggestons.

I have heard you can put a drop of water on it and it will help it to pop off. I have also heard you can very carefully pluck it off with tweezers. Hope that helps.

That’s exactly what I did after reading it somewhere online in the past. My opinion is it saves the seedling a little energy if you are careful enough to not damage the plant.

You have to be incredibly careful and gentle, but I’ve done it plenty of times. It hasn’t happened to me in a while though, because I read that it comes from planting the seeds too shallow. If the seeds starts out a bit deeper, there’s more time and distance for it to loosen the hull on the way up.

Is it the actual hull/shell, or the membrane? I’ve had the membrane get stuck and I actually had to snip it between the cotyledons with fine scissors. If the shell, keep it moist, it should pop off on its own.

It was the hull but I have had the membrane get stuck also. She seems fine so far

I’ll use the drop or mist of water next time. Probably better to let it come off by itself but I’m sure it has to burn some kind of energy wiggling out.

i watched a seedling struggle for almost 4 days to get it off on its own and it couldn’t do it, it struggled so much …so i tossed the whole seedling in the bin, lifes too short to waste time and energy on weak genes…although im getting old, i only have so many grows left in my life

I feel you. I started with 5 and only ended up choosing 2.

*When the seed sprouted, like all seedlings, she was inspected. If she’d been small or puny or sickly or misshapen, she would have been discarded." …ok well not the exact quote from 300 but you get what im saying :stuck_out_tongue:

Hello noob @Skateallday55 welcome to the neighborhood :grinning: I put a couple drops of the water peroxide mix I used to soak the seeds in and keep a clear solo cup on them until the helmet comes off and I remove the dome. A lot of growers use a dome for a long time but I don’t imo they get plenty of moisture through the roots and light is more important to the leaves. That said I do try and keep the tent humidity above 50% 4sure and preferably above 60%
