OK, before I yank this beast

This morning I went downstairs to check on my ladies & was startled to see this:

I flipped to 12/12 on March 1st. I mean, I think I’ve seen enough male plants in my days, but always better to get 2nd & 3rd opinions. This is from a Doug’s Varin photo fem seed, which wasn’t easy to come by.

It does look very much like a boy. The clusters of the flowers is what makes me think that.
And the lack of any pistils. If you have somewhere you could put it, even outside, for another day or two to be absolutely sure I think that’s what I would do.
We have seen a lot more males lately from feminized seeds. Its a very rare possibility, like 1 in a thousand, (or 1 in a 100, i just cant remember exactly) but seems like a more common occurrence over the last several months.
It sucks for sure after all the work and time.

Yep, as soon as I looked down at it this morning & saw the “ball” coming out of the top shoot, I was like “uh-oh!!” I have two other Doug’s that look ok. What’s weird is that one of them I had to separate from another seedling in a solo cup. I was worried that one would be stressed into turning male.

Putting it outside did pop into my head. It’s actually supposed to be in the 60s this week here on Long Island. I did leave the oscillating fan off as a precaution. Now it’s back downstairs to move Junior out into the fresh air !

Stress can cause a plant to throw out a few balls during flowering as a reaction to the stress. Its a mechanism where the plant tries to pollenate before it dies.
But that is just plain male. I don’t believe its from what you did that caused it.

Looks like a male to me buddy.

Thinking I have another male in the flock. Went downstairs to check on them before bedtime & didn’t like the looks of the top shoot. This one is from bag seed, though. Will post some pix after my morning visit.

Here we go.

Top view of the main shoot.

Side view of the main shoot.

These were flipped on March 1st, so pix are after 12 days of 12/12.

Done. Junior’s in the compost pile now.

The site I got the Doug’s Varin seeds from threw in 3 Purple Punch Autos, so I started one of them last night. It’s gonna have to grow in 12/12, but with the light I’m using, it should be just fine.

ETA: what does B.D.M. mean ? :sunglasses:

The stem only grows on male flowers

I just read the email notification that you responded to my post & I thought it said “The setm only grows on FEMALE flowers”. :astonished: Man, I almost dropped a brick !

Yeah, the other day while doing some research on early signs of flowering, this one site described that as a “stick & ball”. Years ago, when I grew Haze X Northern Lights, the branching was more spaced apart & was easy to see male buds when they emerged. The last few plants I’ve grown, White Widow, Runtz, Oreoz, BlueBerry, now this Doug’s Varin, the branches are stacked up like pancakes it seems. Not that that’s a bad thing :sunglasses:

Hey Spiney ! OK, this is another plant I’m getting weird vibrations from. All five were flipped on March 1, but this one ain’t like the others. It does have the white flower pistils, but something just doesn’t seem right when I look into the main bud, other than the developement stage the other plants have reached.

Looks like it was just a little behind the others as far as developing flowers. Its a mix of new veg growth and just beginning to flower. You will see a few extra branches come out of that girl. Plants need to be ready (mature enough to flower) and some take a while longer to get there. I think when you flipped it may have needed another week to reach maturity and so it lagged a little.
That said its not a problem at all. It will come alone and probably mature nearly the same time as the rest. Good looking plants too.

Oh, thank you, Spiney ! That’s great news. I was expecting a hermie at best.

The plants are : the two on the left are Doug’s Varin. the two in the middle are Blueberry on top & Runtz/Oreoz bottom and the “troublemaker” on the right is Jealousy…probably jealous because the other girls are much more developed for their age. Plants & humans do exhibit similar behavior !

Excuse the grow room. It’s been almost 40 years since I first painted it. Still works, though !

Lol, I have the same thing in parts of the house.
If you ever decide to just pick a flat white paint.
For extra covering have the paint guy shoot extra white pigment into the can.
Lots of people dont know that they will do this for free. One coat coverage most the time.

I was wondering, how do I know/ what are the key signs to see, when is she mature enough to flip to flower? I’ve turned my last two grows a lil too soon I believe. They did alright just trying to get the most bang for my buck but not too tall for my tent.

They will show a female flower at the nodes on the branches where the fan leaves connect. Each single flower calyx will have two white pistils coming out of it and the node will have 2 calyx’s , one on each side.
Looks like this…

When you see these it will flower when flipped to 12/12
