Northern Lights-OG Kush-Blue Dream

Alrighty… Here we go, another Grow Journal. This is my first grow of the Northern Lights and OG Kush. I’ve grown the Blue Dream once before, it was some killer weed. Anxious to see how it stacks up to these two legends. We will eventually transfer the ladies within the week or two into the 4x8 tent I have set up in the garage.

I feel like getting some ground work done this morning. The soil I will be using is from an outdoor grow experiment I did last spring, the soil has dried out pretty good. It’s Happy Frog mixed with Mushroom Compost. I’m gonna revitalize it with a quick an easy compost tea I just started this morning. I did the same with 3 other pots earlier this week, was gonna buy some more soil, but I have some here already. So being a little thrifty and conservative about the soil this round of grow. There’s money there so I’m gonna use it or lose it.

We got the area cleaned and dirty at the same time …lol. Moving pots in and then transplanting. We unboxed the stored lights and set them up. It’s been about 6 months since I got to play with this set up. For sake of weather (live in the high heat, lower desert area) and electricity expenses, I use the garage tent mostly during winter months. I jumped the gun by a couple weeks, so still dealing with near 100 degree weather …in October. The swamp cooler will be used during peak hours of heat between 12pm-6pm. The nights cool off to the lower 70’s. Because of this I almost always have the tent doors open. For extreme ventilation. And have 4 fans inside going constantly. Last year I had to deal with Fungas gnats galore. I don’t like using that BTI stuff even if they claim to be organic. But if I have too, if push comes to shove I will. Have my yellow sticky traps ready too. And for added carnage, I ordered some prederory insects. The Rove Beetle and Hypoaspis Miles. These two pack a one two punch. I also spread some cover crop seeds so we’ll have some clovers and friends growing to aid in water retention. I had a mishap with my last grow using straw as a mulch layer. So going with the cover crop this go around. Let’s hope these ladies don’t wilt under the heat!

So far so good, these guys are troopers. They are handling the temps that have gone up to 93 degrees so far. We have one last minor heatwave coming through. Have about 6 fans in total keeping the tent and garage ventilated. This should be the last week near 100 degree weather outside. Wife and I are ready to move these inside in a worse case scenario but things are looking promising in how I’m dealing with this right now. I’ve been giving each pot about 2 cups of the cannabis version of Gatorade … Coconut Water. I’m mixing a very light solution of the stuff. Seems to be helping. I might have to skip a night of this, so easy to over water these guys…too easy.

The predator army has arrived… it’s so on right now… ,

Good thing with photoperiod plants, you can wait it out if everything is not ready before flippin into flower. I have an Achilles Heel… I over water and put way to much amendments in my soil. My pots are super hot right now and I read up on using wood dust as a mulch layer to extract nitrogen from the soil. Might take a couple weeks. Right now the Nitrogen Toxicity is slowing the growth rate down a bit. Just water for 2 weeks. See how that goes. I don’t flush my pots. I’m not a synthetic bottle feeder. Half of the soil in these pots is “new”, that could be part of it. The tell tale signs I’m getting is the top taco leaves and tip of the leaves pointing down, with that darker than normal green. So we’ll wait it out for couple weeks. If these were autos … I’d be up shit creek without a paddle. My indoor grow is not as hot as these guys in my garage…thank goodness! I’m not feeding any of these guys till I flip or see any hunger. I’m trying to decide to turn the lights down a bit or just leave them at 400 par. They’re about 30inches above at 50% right now. Looks like the Kush are not as dark green as the rest but one of them has had the twisting lower leaves since the red cups it was in, so probably genetics.

Got us some red worms. I’ve read that peat moss is bad for worms for the acidity in the media… funny thing is…the red worms were shipped in this bag filled with peat moss! Hmmm … Anyways we’ve decided to pump up the humidity. Something we should’ve been doing more of at this stage of growth.

I just had an interesting observation of my grow that’s having me brainstorming how to capitalize on my new finding. I’ve noticed that the pots (2 of them) right at the tent side that’s open, (I partially open the tent to improve on the circulation and temperature) grow more robustly. It’s not even close. Even with the cool temps outside the garage manages to stay a little warm. So when my lights go on I hit the lower 80s if I keep the tent closed, even with the exhaust fan on. So I remedy that by opening one door and hitting that side with my 30 inch swamp cooler. That side…just loves that air. I’m gonna have to manage a way so that the entire tent gets hit with this air somehow. I have a storage bay between the tent and the fan that pushes massive air. I was originally using the swamp cooler to cool the garage from the desert heat outside. And after noticing my tent was still getting warm with the inner exhaust fan on, tried pointing the swamp cooler towards the tent. So gonna see if I can move some boxes away from the center of this already stacked storage bay. My lights put out some heat, so much for LEDs being much cooler.

Letting the pots dry out a bit, my heavy watering hand back at it again, really tough to not do anything. The OG Kush are suffering from it with dropping leaves to show for it. I went in there yesterday and did a quick visual under the sawdust mulch layer, and …it’s drenched. I reset my moisture meters and will half my watering for a week or two, because we’re in the stretch period. these will double in size almost between now and Thanksgiving.

Got a couple things going on right here. Little drama series as I call them. The first one, I’m not sure I’m liking the trellis here. It’s awfully hard to trim the bottom if you can’t turn the pots around, and the watering is an acrobatics exercise too. My brain fart forgot that I have them thin sticks that I use to separate branches when needed. See if I eventually tear this down before I can’t. And I’m a little concerned about the lime green lady (OG Kush) dead center in the photo. I just feed it today since I transplanted it a few moons ago. I’m trying out this organic fish and kelp fertilizer, tablespoon to the gallon solution. We’ll see how she responds.
