Wondering about upgrading. I have 3 girls 26 days since first light. Running 214w 4 tube 4’ t5 in a 2×4×5’tall tent… Thinking of switching to viparspectre par700 dimable. Any thoughts? My girls are 6 inches tall and wider than that. Pretty health so far. Just dont think I can flower health buds with 4 3000k red bulbs. Not enough juice. Maybe run the viparspectre and the t5 on the side…

I’m a fan of Viparspectra’s. I have two 900’s and have had no problems so far, after a couple months of use.

Once again appreciate the input, thanks.

Here’s my deal - I have to do a stealth grow, the wife and the mother in law who live with us are decidedly not into it as I live in a state where it’s still prohibited. So I really can’t ventilate.

So my question is - can I pull this off? I can keep my space hidden well, but can I grow a worthwhile 2-4 plants without ventilating? I plan to go with some pretty decent LED’s, likely the viparspectra & light strips and/or some CFL’s that were suggested, and I’ll be able to provide fox farms soil & the tiger bloom, grow big & bloom juice. I also think I can control the temp/humidity as needed. I plan to open the door regularly & have a small fan to keep the air circulating, but no vents for proper air exchange.

I’m a persistent SOB, so once I start I’ll see it thru, but is it likely going to be a ton of work for minimal reward or can I generate a decent yield? Any thoughts would be appreciated as always.

Hey @RegDunlop

What are you gonna do when those babies start getting stinky? Are you in a house or an apartment? If your in an apartment you are gonna stink up the whole building and your women are gonna be p-o’d and you know who gonna come visit trying to figure out where it’s comin’ from!

I know of guys that ventilate there grows right into the room there in, but they use a carbon filter and an exhaust fan to get rid of the odor.

Yield really depends on the type of plants, the lights, nutrients, grow space, etc… But I think you will find that it’s cheaper to grow than it is to buy.

Before you go spending money on lights etc, you need to check to make sure your electric circuits can handle it.

So I say yes you can figure this out and weed love to help you (see what I did there with the weed, lol)

So let’s figure it out. We love a challenge!

@RegDunlop I need to control odor and i cannot use carbon filter so i’m using this :

Weed love your input and assistance, thanks! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Own my place with no neighbor issues. If wife finds my plants it’s not life ending, but it’s still a discussion I’d prefer not to have…

My space is in the basement, which is finished with drywall ceilings, so it’s pretty well contained. Only rarely will anyone venture down there - it’s essentially my man cave (not a fan of the term but it’s probably accurate in my case). The space itself tho is in a closet w/locking door. Walls of closet are studs w/insulation covered by a reflective foil backing (perfect!). Only place air can possibly escape would be thru any small cracks in the ceiling of the closet, which is the underside of the far corner of my kitchen. I plan to nail up some heavy plastic, almost tarp thickness, to seal the top. I think I’ll have a pretty airtight room after that. Admittely though, odor control is one of my concerns so I hope i can control it by sealing up the space w/heavy plastic…

Brian, in your photo of your girls - if I was going to top my plants to try to restrict vertical growth would I do so when they are at the size of yours in the photo or would I need to wait until they’re a bit taller? I probably have about 32"-36" of vertical space from planter top to safe distance from lights, so I need to watch the height and am thinking a scrog would be a good idea also…

A scrog is especially good if you are working with small spaces and limited plants. I’m working with a 2x3 foot space and one ak47 auto.

I like @Niala idea above as an option for odor control you should consider.

Don’t know if you’re on Robert Bergman’s email list but he sent one out yesterday about budget grows and there might be some info there that might be applicable to your situation. I’m gonna go find it and link it in for you.

My grow including seeds is under $200 I will go over that slightly when I buy nutrients though.

Here’s what I was referring to:

Your going to stink out where ever you have then
Charcoal filters and inline fan is going to be a must have bro
I built my tent myself and put plastic 2mil black and made a grow room with that as walls ceiling I’m in my basement so anyway it’s a tent in a tent and with my exhaust fan running 24/7 with a charcoal filter
You can still slightly smell it when I walk into room
When I open tent the whole room( larger tent) gets stinky
I actually just purchased a second inline fan to vent room
My wife knows. About my grow just doesn’t want to smell it upstairs lol
As of yet I don’t smell it up stairs but second exhaust will prevent it from ever getting there

Ok, so I’m going to have to find a way to ventilate somehow. I’m working on it…

In meantime, a lighting question again if anyone would be so kind:

I have decided that LED is the way to go for me bc of heat and power usage reasons. I also like the fact that I won’t need to swap out bulbs for flowering (that is correct, right?)…So my question is, am I going to get a noticeably higher yield if I go with one of the more expensive advance spectrum LED’s that they have at grow ace (I believe they sponsor this site so I am ok using their name), Iike the S450, or am I smarter to just go with the more economical light suggested by Niala (thanks btw!)?

If the more costly light will lead to more bountiful harvests later on than I am willing to make that upfront investment, but it’s a difference of about $300-400 so I want to make sure there is a reason for the higher price and that I will be able to actually benefit from that reason…thanks as always!!!

And a slight change in plans as far as strain as well: I am going to try 2-3 ILGM Blueberry Autos instead. Don’t want to take chance I will herm them out, as this is my first grow. So I’ll have 2-3 plants in a roughly 40" by 30" by 8’ space…

I’d love to see yields in the ranges Niala mentioned, but as a first timer if I could pull even 1.5-2 oz dry off each plant I’d consider that a success for sure…

Ok I believe the light you mentioned is rated at actual watt draw and are great lights
Not like the cheaper one that draw usually 1/2 the rated wattage
That said you don’t necessarily need to spend the big $
You could get 2 1000 watt light for same price and cover more space and still get awesome results
I used two 300watt led light actual 147 watts ea draw and two 400 watt cob style that draw 197 ea actual watts
Rule of thumb is 50 watts per square foot of plant canopy :seedling: you plan on have but you can use square footage for now
If you can afford it I’m sure you love the results

The yielding was in the wildest dream and ideal conditions and every thing goes without a glitch with a high yielding strain :innocent::v:

For the difference between lights giving more yielding, I honestly cannot give you a clear answer, I just don’t know the answer. However, in my humble opinion, maybe in a very big culture setting, but in 4 to 5 plants setting as you gone a be abble to do, I don’t tink it’s worth the investement.

@Majiktoker start a topic on compare HPS VS LED lights, and intend to start an another one in the futur to compare LED lights.:innocent:

Hoping that I have enlighten you a little bit more and that you’ll find this helpful @RegDunlop :innocent: :v:
