New set up help in the land down under

Hi all, hoping to pick a few of your mega brains in here, I’m new to this type of growing, so I apologise in advance for stupid questions. :grimacing:
will only be growing 1-3 plants max
Items I can purchase in Australia would be super helpful too

I’m looking at setting up a grow tent and have a few questions.

  • What brand and size tent should I look for?
  • What type/brand/size of light should I look for?
  • What other hardware should I be looking for?
Trying to get myself all set up correctly before planting a seed.

Thank you for your help and happy growing

I can tag a few aussie growers for you @KingKeiko @Ironmoose @hidef @Aussie_autos @Hashtonbutcher. Also we need to know the area you have to work with. Like in my situation im in a basement but im limited to 68 inches so i could only get one style of tent and they only come in specific sizes. If your just asking about what brand is best id have to say ac infinity and gorilla tents currently. The size of the light will vary on your tent size. Some of these lights nowadays are 4x4 bar lights and will literally fill a tent. Also take into account how long you want to veg these for because 1 mature plant will fill a 4x4 alone. The basic startup hardware you will need is a tent, light, ventilation system for the tent, fans inside the tent, humidifier, dehumidifier, ph pen, ppm/tds pen, light timers, nutrients, grow bags(depending on how often you want to transplant you might need 2 sizes), a growing medium (soil, coco, pre made bags, or a hydro setup), solo cups (clear and a solid color same size), drip trays, plant risers, a humidity dome (or a bigger cup some say wendy and other big brand fast food cups fit perfect over a solo cup), some sort of way to cure . Some optional things are a par meter (even of you dont buy this you will need a way to measure light intensity so you dont burn your plants), inkbird controllers (this will automate your heating and cooling with one controller and your dehumidifier and humidifier with the other), flushing agent (in case things get bad or some you just use with your nutes to help prevent builup), mycorrhizae (i use this intially planting the seedling and then every transplant after), water purifier, and a master controller(for your lights to control the tent environment and or light intensity). I hope this isnt overload for you and i hope you find it useful. Here soon one of these others should chime in on finding that local to you

@aussiebuder

I agree with this comment.
You need quality only products.
Especially for checking pH .
You need TDS pen, EC pen,I just use EC.
I have bought cheaper lights and thought they would be OK,big mistake.
Have a heap of lights I would not give away, will take them to recycle one day.
Buy a good quality light straight up,no regrets like me.
You need to get oscillating fans ,humidifier,de-humidifier.
Water buckets, jugs ,electric outlets, timers…sure I have forgot stuff.
Someone else will contribute.
And the main thing you need is time and patience to devote to your garden
Then you need to read.and re read everything you can about growing.
Edit- pH up, pH down , pH meter calibration solution - pH meter storage solution.

Awesome! thanks for all that info and tags
Guess I’ll be growing one at a time, probably good to do that anyway until I get my knowledge up to standards.
Tent shall be in an insulated room in a shed. The available space I have is 1.5x1.5x2m (still leaves a little room to move around)
Growing medium will be soil/coco, not hydroponic.
I’m guessing I’ll do auto flower to start with, unless that’s a really bad idea?

I learned a lot from this specific post

Autos will flip whenever they want so if your new it might be best to do a photoperiod plant in my opinion

Thanks for that info.
I’m the type of person that likes buy things once and buy quality gear, no matter the job.
I have grown outdoors and loved checking on the plant and watching it grow, the more you put into these plants the more you get out. I have plenty of time to devote.
Hoping to get some local info on brands/availability that have been tried for this.

Thanks mate, just want to make sure I get decent gear in the kit, the tent might be ok, but then they chuck an average light in there to keep costs down, that’s why I was asking about brands/models people know and trust.

[/quoi I made the mistake of buying a cheap tent. I worry about zipper failure. Sounds like you need a 3x3 tent. You can easily start off 4 or more autos. They don’t get very big.

Welcome! Not sure of which end of Oz you are in but if you in the hotter zone then make sure your sheds inside temps don’t exceed 30deg C
