1st time grow tent setup advice

Hi all. I am looking to begin my cultivation journey and am having a hard time deciding on if I should invest in a grow tent kit or put my own kit together. Being a newbie the whole kit idea is attractive but I also have a feeling these kits include extra’s I might not necessarily need to get started or they come with a light that I will want to replace fairly soon.

I would like to get a 4x4 grow tent. I’ve been thinking about this grow kit but would like to hear what y’all think?

If it would serve me best to put together my own “kit” starting with a 4x4 tent, what would you say are the essentials for me to purchase to put it all together and start growing? What should my checklist be to get started?? I guess the light would be the most important factor to consider. Also not sure if this matters but I’d like to start my first grow with auto’s before diving into photoperiods.

There’s a lot of info I’ve been absorbing from these forums it’s been a little overwhelming so I figured heck might as well start my first post with this haha

Thanks in advance for any help

Just to answer your initial question, a "good"grow light and you can buy just a 4x4 tent or if you have a closet or something already it wil do as well. Theres 500 questions beyond your first one. In time…

So basic get going-
Light
Area to grow
Ph water/ability to test
Pots
Soil
That’s minimal.
Nutes??

haha thanks. 500 questions is putting in mildly  I was starting to come to the conclusion I would want a led full spectrum bar light 400+ watts for a 4x4 area - in regards to that kit i linked…are you saying I should just ignore the “kits” that are out there and start piecing together my own setup?

Thats what I did. Actually bought light first. Then a tent. Realized light was too small and bought a second. After that came the fans, exhaust, nutes, meters, …kinda levelled off there. You can never say enough about the importance of a good light for good buds. We all gotta make do as well. 400 is a good range for 4x4 area. You’re starting off with good logic. Start you a journal here basically and folks will chime in and help. This is the place to get one in line with the hobby and not be treated with disdain or ridicule for learning.

I bought a grow tent kit off amazon spider farmer specifically honestly I’m happy with my purchase with that being said depending on what your budget is and what you’re trying to set up for buying a kit can be expensive up front but they generally pay for themselves quickly piecing it together over time is generally more expensive but it can be spread out over time so its do you want a full set up and a bigger upfront cost or do you want to build on it as you go a 4x4 kit us probably going to run $600+ for a reputable brand honestly if you have the budget and the room for it a grow tent kit is my recommendation you can always upgrade things from there the light I’m using is not the light I started with

This is only a 27x27x63 and I can get 4oz a harvest on average I’ve done that both with mainlining a single plant and with running 3 clones at a time so with a 4x4 you can definitely do a lot just make sure its a good brand like spider farmer or vivosun personally I use spider farmer this was my last harvest 3.9oz

My first tent was an ACI kit 3x3. I quickly realized I wanted more room. I then bought an ACI 4x4 but ordered components separately. I wanted their EVO 8 light , kit came with EVO 6. ACI is great on tents, zippers, and fans, their lights are very good, many prefer HLG lights. I think as you plan spend now so you are not buying something new in 6 mos. HLG and ACI both have great customer support.

Blow biggest part of the budget on light. Can do a cheap tent/fan etc to start. Start with a good light though.

there was another kit I was looking at that came with a SF4000 301H EVO Full Spectrum LED Grow Light but from what I’ve been reading it seems like most people prefer the bar lights. like patrick1960 said I am just trying not to put myself in a position right away where I want to spend more $$ on a new light after the 1st grow lol

They can power a 4x4 just fine.

The first and best thing to do, IMO, is to read the ILGM Grow Guides. There’s a link to them at the top of this page.

That’s a great point. The seed side is full of good guides more simply laid out than the complexity of the forum.

Welcome aboard @Growtiv8tion. Lights lights lights. The better your light, the better your yeild and quality. We generally like the bar style over the panels because they dissipate heat better. That helps keep temps in the tent temp down, but both will grow fine kind. That kit would be a good start. The sf 4000 is the minimum you want for a 4x4. I personally run 680w for that space, but that Se 5000 kit wouldn’t disappoint. If you have the funds there are a few more pieces that would help, but you can build up you tools as you go.
