My personal grow journal

thank you. that makes a lot of sense. I will look at doing that on the next grow. Thanks a lot.

So for 50 bucks I too could be growing hydroponically. LOL @WickedAle I do believe that when I get back in November this year You will be seeing me growing this way. I have been reading a bit more about it. Yes it is subject to minor changes but… it really doesn’t look too hard. I actually am convinced thanks.

You actually need an air pump and stone, not a water pump. I use active aqua 4 port pump. Think I paid $25 for the pump and $2 for each air stone. The water pump would come later if you wanted to go recirculating DWC. But I fear leaks so I stay simple. No bottom out port.

I don’t pay big $$ for something I can get at Walmart for $5 and saw a 3” hole in it for $0.5 net pot but that bucket would work. Don’t bother with the kit. Get each part separate.

I understand. But isn’t it best to get a black bucket and black top so that the light won’t shine through I think right? I would actually put drains in mine. I was thinking that the pump would bring water to the plant to drip down. I might consider one additional line using a tee to circulate water to stir up nutes.

Once the plant shades the lid you don’t have to worry about it. I saw a black lid and bucket somewhere, but can’t remember. I honestly don’t have much problem with white lids. A bit of algae in the beginning. It’s the molds/fungi that are really detrimental to the plant. So rockwool is something I am going to avoid in the future and use rapid rooters instead.

I understand. I was actually looking at bringing water up to the roots as well. That was something that was pretty much standard in the hydro systems I saw.

I have extra buckets instead of a drain. I fill the extra bucket with nutes and swap with old …dump old…dump…refil… swap to next plant…etc, etc. Use my bathtub to change the nutes. Can do all 4 in 5 minutes. No pumping no mess. Put the air lines through the lid with plant so I just lift the lid out and swap to new bucket.

I think the amazon kit is pretty nifty in that it has a drain and water level indicator as a single item.

How often do you change the bucket?

7-14 days depending on how the plant is feeding. Usually change after 50% of bucket has been consumed (estimated because I constantly am topping up the buckets every 2-3 days)

You can also see I zip tie my net pots. Have had them tip over and slip through the lid into the dwc.

so then this brings me to flower. Are we not supposed to be moving the plants while they are growing flowers? How do you get the bucket out without spilling water?

As I said all I do is take lid with plant out and swap it to a new bucket. This doesn’t allow for SCROG so I haven’t used my SCROG net yet. I have been able to SCROG without a screen. This plant is 36 inches in diameter.

that is huge. even looking at it from on top that is going to be awkward to pick up off the top of the bucket high enough to get the bucket out late in bloom.

You have a great grow going there. I am on my very first ever in my life. I don’t even know if it will make it to the end this time.

I think I like the idea that I can change the water and put water up to the roots at my command is a nice thing. That was what I was reading in a guide. I still have months to go before I begin another. All of this growing is making me nervous.

Was actually tougher to swap out the 5.5 ft auto trees. Those are the ones that tipped and slipped through the lid.

DWC is actually boring. No worrying about pH and PPM. Just watching the plant grow daily! Really nothing to worry about. All I use is GH Flora Trio and armor Sl. That’s it. Water in between refeeds. I have never had to adjust the pH between refeeds, except when I screwed up and added sugar to finish. Made a gooey snot mess that killed the roots. Not going there again.

well here is something for you. you could use the bucket designed on that amazon link and attach a pump to drain and then to fill the bucket.

Could do that too. Whatever is easiest for you. When ppl start using pumps they start converting their systems to RDWC. Bit more complicated but even more control of pH and PPM.

I have a question. Just want to make sure. I think it is female but just want to make sure.

Thanks it looks a little different than the Durban. I am disappointed in her growth. The Durban is good. At 6 weeks I think she is about to take off. This Maui is really kind of a bit lagging. I suppose it will be okay. I am going to give her a few more weeks but I am going to use the Durban Poison as the main plant and start the 12/12 with her in mind. The Maui is just going to have to do what she can.

I fed her last night. I used GH growth nutrients on filtered water. The PH was 6.4 so I let her rip and fed to 15% runoff. This morning the leaves look a bit greener and she stood up a bit taller. I will take pictures later.

Even though I am disappointed with the Maui’s growth I am glad that she is a female and she is still healthy. Gonna be what it is gonna be.

Is this a pre-flower?

@WickedAle It wasn’t that it is easier it was how I was reading it in this “Bubbleponics” grow guide.

Your grow is exactly right but reading through this guide gives me a few more ideas that I think add to the process and not take anything away. A lot of what you were explaining to me was also explained in that link. I am already in the middle of a soil grow and I will not have time enough to start another one before I leave for South Korea and a 2 month vacation, although since I am retired I honestly cannot call it a vacation.
