My perpetual grow journal ( a lot you can do with a home office)

Thanks @Spudgunner . The white stuff on top DE for the fungus gnats .

You’d be the person to talk to about the transplanting the soil clones into coco. I was gonna get some distilled water and fill up a 5 gallon bucket and shake the roots off and dip them in the water and then put in coco pots. What do you think about this? Do you have a better method?

I’ve never done it, but if I were to, I’d fill up an ice cream bucket and soak them in their current pot in that bucket for a few minutes, then lift them out and swill a little. If there is a clump of soil on the middle of the root ball, I’d leave that intact, if you got all the roots free of soil and exposed, it might damage them when you put them in the coco. As long as a lot of the outside roots are exposed, they will spread out into the coco. These shouldn’t have large root systems yet, so you may be able to get them pretty clean, mostly roots.
When you replace the soil with coco, do it slowly so not to clump the roots together. If there is a large root or 2, poke a hole into your coco with a pencil and guide those long ones down those holes if you can. Make sure the coc is damp and compressed before you do it too, so that it doesn’t compress AFTER you’ve put them in - otherwise the roots could compress which you don’t want.

For the smaller ones, if they are rootbound, I’d almost be inclined to just put the whole thing in soil, so you have a soil plug in the middle of the coco. Better than damaging the roots and shocking them, imho.

Nice looking clones, I gave away a bunch that looked like those (and sold 9 for $35 just to recoup some of the cost!). Curious how much you pay for clones where you are, I can usually find them up here for $10 to $20 each depending on size.

I paid 120 for 6 of them but they are pheno hunted genetics so we’ll see. Being that I’m in nyc/ Brooklyn there’s not a lot of option for buying clones or genetics if any and the clone I just dropped 300$ on for mail order died. It will be worth it if they are what they are suppose to be a1 genetics that I can keep around for years if I chose to as a mother plant. Thanks you so much @Spudgunner for this information: I knew you would have something good for me . That’s Bette than I could find on scowling google :joy:

What about topping them??? When would you suggest doing it and where ??? To which node ? I’ve never had a clone this late in the game that wasn’t topped yet lol. I usually top after the 5th node grows .

I’d let them get established in their new homes for a couple of weeks before topping. I don’t really top my clones when I grow them out - they usually have staggered nodes so the first node will become the dominant ā€œtopā€, not 2 ā€œtopsā€, so I don’t see any gain in topping them personally. But if the nodes are still close, do it in a week or 2.

You can see on the top clones that they aren’t really growing symmetrically. What I do is train the tops over so the lower branches take off and catch up to the topmost branches.

What do you think about dusting the roots off without water for the clones in solo cups? I was thinking maybe just taking them out if the solo cups and shaking them out gently, then putting them into the coco. Do you think that would shock them too much as well?

That would work as well. I normally just use ProMix for my clones and final pot so I don’t this issue lol! Is the soil they are in porous or is it like good rich garden soil that clumps? If so, it may hold moisture longer than the coco so you might want to remove what you can, otherwise just leave it if you want. You’re bottom feeding with autopots so that bit of soil won’t stay too wet and affect the roots.

Thanks for your wisdom as always my friend! I’m actually not going to use the autopots again . I loved them in veg but am not a fan of using them for flower. I need more control for my grow style and do not like not being able to drop the humidity below 60rh. So I am using a floraflex top feed system and am loving it. So I’m gonna go ahead and stick with that and get one for my other tent.

Damn! I am thinking about getting them for my next grow! Just want to have the flexibility to go away for a week and not have to worry about them!

Here here! I also like the no electricity aspect. With all the fans, lights, timers, etc already plugged in, these are very appealing. Either more cords and powerstrips or installing more outlets seem to be the routes id have to take if i do a floraflex type system or build my own automated system.

They look fine to me. How many watts is that light you’re using ? Might not be enough wattage for your space

I wanna top these clones but it’s. A little late In the game and I’ve never topped this far Along In the cycle . @Spudgunner @PharmerBob @BigCat420 which nodes would you guys top from if it were you? Thanks , hope everyone’s week is going stellar!

I’m gonna wait until after they recover their transplant like @Spudgunner suggested yesterday. I just want to know which node would be the best to top from.

I like to top from the 4th-5th node. Gary satan was really tall and unmanageable to train before topping. Right after you top start training branches down and out. I find this to be easiest with landscape staples. Did that with gary satan immediately after topping and i love the structure and look of her. Transplanted 2 days later after recovering from topping and shes still got the best structure of the whole group

What about the side branches on the nodes not lining up perfectly like from a seedling, will it still grow back with two tops? Do you have any suggestions, I don’t have much experience topping clones as I’ve been a seedling guy up until recently lol .

Probably not. When you top, you stop the dominant branch and then the even set/topmost nodes become equally dominant. When they are staggered already like clones tend to be, not sure if you just make that one top node the now-dominant node/branch. Which is why I don’t really top my clones. I usually bend that main down and then all the side branches really take off. Here’s one from last year. First shot was before LST, her just growing all natural, no topping or trimming at this point.

And then I LST them like so, below.

A week later…

A month later

Topping MAY make those lowers grow and catch up, but I feel you can achieve the same with training. At least with clones when the branches don’t grow in pairs like seedlings’ do.

Where the side branches staggered on the Gary satan you topped @BigCat420 ? Or were they side by side like seedlings ?

Is that 4th or 5th node counting from the top down or bottom up? Thanks brother
