Merlin's Grow Log (Part 2)

@merlin44 Wishing you and Shell a safe, enjoyable trip and a wonderful time with your mom!

Thanks for the plant update! Rocket nugs, looking great and autumny!

Sorry about CP-1, though you have your priorities straight to take care of your family first.

We are home without any difficulties. Mrs Merlin enjoyed the day.

When we left home there was 3" of snow at the house. The road at the bottom of our property is 300’ lower in elevation and there was just a skiffing of snow. All clear coming home. No chains required.

We stopped at Grow Generation for soil and nutrients. We got 12 cu. ft. of Roots Organic Original soil (4 3 cu. ft. bags at $20 ea), 2 cu. ft of worm castings and 9 lbs each of four of the Roots Organic dry nutrients for $271. That is enough soil and worm castings for two grows with a little left over. The nutrients should be good for 3 or 4 grows, depending upon how many plants per grow.

The closest Grow generation to me is in groveport ohio outside of Columbus, still an hour + away. Seems like a good store!

Grow Generation in Eugene Oregon is between my house and my Mom’s house. The store, like yours, is about an hour or so away. Your store may not have prices this good, but they are worth checking out.

The cool thing is that Aurora Industries (Root Organic company) is located just 5 miles from our Grow Generation store. They get a tremendous break which they pass on to all of us. In addition to their excellent prices, they give me a nice 10% discount on the nutrients and the worm castings. At $20, the soil is discounted about 45% from the retail price.

I got five different nutrients (9 lb bags) rather than the four that I mentioned earlier.

Depending on what you’re currently using you’ll probably never look back. It’s $20-25 for 1.5 ft³ depending on which store i get it here. Not as easy to find as ff but way more consistent from bag to bag and it’s more airy right out of bag. So you don’t typically have to worry about cutting with perlite and being heavy in wood chips like you sometimes find with ff.

I didn’t take a photo. I inspected the dying CP-1 plant. The entire stalk has turned brown. It will be interesting to inspect the roots.

Here is a shot of the Grow Generation haul before I moved it all to the basement.

Mine too…The large bags are still in the truck. I tweaked my back shoveling snow.

Hey @Newt I am planning to build a DIY system based on this link that you posted a couple of years ago.

Do you have any recommendations or words of wisdom as I begin this project?

Anyone that has something to add are welcome.

I believe @Covertgrower could help too with such a setup

That is perfect, thanks @kaptain3d. I will study that.

I figure a bit of study will save me money and frustration.

I hope you can put that cp-1 to good use with extraction!:wink:

That is indeed the plan.

There are convenience differences between ethanol extraction, and butane extraction. Both have advantages, and disadvantages.
Ethanol is readily available, where dry ice isn’t always available.
Butane extracts retain more terpenes, as the entire process is cold, while ethanol extracts give up some terpene content while being recovered. But ethanol is readily available, and you can do small batches.
It depends a lot on how much you need to run, and if dry ice is available.

I like ethanol for convenience and ease of use, butane extraction requires some thought, with knowledge that butane will chase the cold, and safety precautions before extracting.

If I missed something, let me know, I still have your contact, and sometimes things are explained better.

I just decided to go this route yesterday. I suppose I have been mulling it over for some time.

The point is that I am in the early stages of planning. When you have the time, I would love to discuss this and pick your brain.

I am currently strongly leaning toward ethanal extraction. I am open to other methods…I am ready to be convinced. I have not explored butane or other extraction methods. I have used avocado oil to make some butter (three times) with disappointing results.

Thank you for the complete and thoughtful reply.
