Good morning, Everyone. Many of you have been aware of Mrs Merlin’s struggle with dementia. You have been kind and supportive friends to us. We appreciate you all so very much.
We knew it was coming…a few days ago it became clear the Mrs Merlin had no idea who I am. That was a huge blow and took me by surprise despite the fact that it is the only outcome that we can expect. I did work to get my act back together.
Yesterday we spent a couple of hours looking at photographs and talking about our many wonderful trips. After a while her brain suddenly turned back on (it was like a light switch), and she knew who I was again.
We had an incredibly wonderful afternoon together. As expected, her mind has slipped overnight. After breakfast we will go through the photos again and talk about the great times. My hope is that I can help her remember again.
I plan to keep her at home and care for her as long as I am physically able to do so.
Don’t be sad for us. We have had a wonderful life together and will steal wonderful moments as we can, going forward.

My heart felt this post. My heart goes out to you having to experience this every morning.
My mom doesn’t remember my name, but she remembers my face, and doesn’t remember I have kids, and a better half.
I completely empathize with you through this.
We all do the best we can, and try to help them remember, but even if we can’t make them, sometimes loving support is all you have and for a person with dementia sometimes that’s all they need.
I’ll do what I can, but don’t be afraid to reach out if you need anything, even for moral support. I’m here for you.

That is not so bad. She trusts me, even when she is not able to remember who I am. She does know that I am caring for her.
If I were to lose her trust, things would be much more difficult. Let’s hope that does not happen.

I’m so sorry to hear about this, I cannot begin to imagine how difficult it is for both of you. It’s beautiful that you’re creating these precious moments together, even in the face of such difficulty. You’re a true testament to love and dedication. Please remember to take care of yourself too. I lost my father almost 2 years ago now in july. It still doesnt feel real, but he suffered from dementia at the end of his life, and couldnt remember my name when i tried to speak to him those last few days. I am in tears feeling for you at the moment, @merlin44 . I cant imagine going through this with my wife also. If i can do anything for you, let me know.
