Greetings fellow gardeners. I’m debating on down-sizing my autoflower containers from 5 gallon to 3 gallon. I’ve had great success with the 5 gallon containers but I could always use more room in my tent. I use fabric pots, probably should have started with that. Anyway, I’m looking to pick the brains of you that have tried/use 3 gallon grow bags with autoflowers. I’m growing my first photoperiod grow now but I’ve got several autoflower grows under my belt. The photoperiod plants will continue to be grown in 5 gallon containers using SCROG. I’m hoping I can grow autos in a SOG. Any and all advice will help. Thank you for taking the time to read my first post on The Forum.
It has been a while since I grew autos. When I did, I used both 3 and 5 gallon fabric pots. I have a 3x3 and 3 gallon works great in it.
@beardless Thanks for the reply. I’ve been gardening in the dirt outside since I was big enough to walk. My family always had a 2-3 acre vegetable garden. This indoor growing is all new to me! The last couple of grows I looked at the root mass after harvest and figured I could drop to a 3 gallon but I wanted to ask everyone their thoughts. Thanks again!
When you say sog, how many plants are you thinking and what are the measurements of your grow space? When i think sog the picture in my head is basically 1 gallon pots stacked side to side or close to it.
@dbrn32 My tent is 4’x2’. I’m thinking as many 3 gallon pots as I can shove in there. With LST I should be able to have them touching or just overlapping. I’m kind of scared of topping or FIMing autos. I think I’m going to try this after the grow I’ve got now is finished, just depends on what kind of luck I have with the photoperiod plants. Right now I’ve got four plants going, 3 photoperiod and one auto. The photos are all indica strain: Granddaddy Purple, Bubba Kush, and Pure Indica. I’ve got one White Widow autoflower bringing one up the rear that’s 3 weeks younger than the photos. I may order some 1and 2 gallon grow bags to experiment with. I use Fox Farms Ocean Forest and Happy Frog in the center for seeds to start off in. I don’t transplant. It’s easier and better on the plants to start them in their final home. I’m retired so I can keep a careful eye on them. Thanks for all the help!
You should check out mattybear’s grow. He’s running 8 plants in 2x4, pretty sure they are in 1 or 2 gallon pots.
@dbrn32 I’ll sure check it out! Thanks for the help! I believe this is the best resource around for growers helping growers. I’ve learned so much just reading this forum for the past year or so. Every question I’ve had before this one I could search the forum and find an answer for. This place is AWESOME!
Me personally i would stay with five gallon fabric pots but if ur looking to do a sea of green go the 3 gallon fabric pots cause u can fit more plants in ur tent
@Aussie_autos that is my thinking exactly. I just ordered some 3 gallon bags as I’ve got plenty of fives. I thought I was on the right track but a little reassurance has never hurt anyone. Thank you for your input. I truly appreciate everyone that helps me out!
No worries at all anytime i hope it all goes well for you
