Gotcha. That’s what sis was thinking.
It’s going great so far. The early Bluster is on week 2 & 3 of curing. If what I’ve smoked of that is an indication of what’s to come. What’s still growing should be…
What do you know… I’m already on it. Now I guess while everyone is hunting deer I’ll be hunting worms.
Basil is a good cover crop because it chases bugs away. But clovers realse Nitrogen back into the soil once they’ve been growing for awhile.
I’m terrible at plant identification unless it’s cannabis.
I think that’s oregano growing based on Google lens but still not 100% sure. It’s just whatever sprouted after I harvested that plant and left it outside to throw dead fan leaves in. I do have plenty of clover patches around though.
Basil is a wonderful smelling herb used in alot of Italian foods. I grow it every summer. I could take a couple clippings for you to clone and send them to you or you can get them sent to your doorstep from Bonnie Plants or just go to a Home Depot.
Thanks bro. I think we actually have a basil plant we use for cooking I can take cuttings from. I’m not actually using this soil again anyway. I’m starting next season with comsb and organic nutes. Then I’ll reuse that. I just thought it was funny all that sprouted wild after I harvested the plant.
Buds are change to way beauty, love the fall colors!!!
My outdoor pots do the same. I get all kinds of stuff growing out of them. Its a sign that the soil is still active with nutrients.
Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love getting out into the woods and taking long walks.
We have 50 acres here all wooded except the 2 acres around the house, and some river bottom, I have trails everywhere and its nice to walk them! Just aquired back another 50 across the river and gravel road mostly field bjt some woods, will make good goose hunting once it starts to get planted!
Lentils & Clover
Your weather looks like you might have some time left. Lens culinaris or Lens esculenta are a great choice because, due to their relatively small size, they will germinate faster than the larger legumes.
“legumes gain access to nitrogen through symbiotic association with rhizobia. These bacteria convert nitrogen gas into biologically available ammonia in nodules through a process termed symbiotic biological nitrogen fixation, which plays a decisive role in ecosystem functioning.”
Thinking of them worms now and trying to work all the angles. You could plant barley. It would burn off any residual salts. Recover back some dat money spent on nutrition by bring the nutrition to the surface for you to collect in a usable mulch. You could start Spring with a re-amend like 4-4-4 and some rock dust. Top the straw you made this Fall. Plant the above cover. Fix N and fungal symbiosis all while keeping the microheard and mutha F’N worms goin.
[Source] USDA sheet:
• Barley also discourages weed germination by producing allelopathic chemicals (chemicals that are toxic to other plants)."
• When seeded in a fall mixture, barley can provide protection to fragile red clover or sweet clover seedlings (Reid et al., 1979)."
• Excessive nitrate leaching: Grass cover crops have deep roots and are useful for their ability to capture nitrogen by the primary crop. Barley absorbs nitrogen and retains it in long-lasting biomass.
• Residue from mature plants has a very high carbon to nitrogen ratio (meaning that it will break down slowly in the soil)
@Budbrother thanks for sharing all the info. You are truly on some next level . I am honored to have access to your depth of knowledge sir.
Just adding onto Lime’s info trying ta help
@Budbrother definitely, thank you for all the great information. I am growing indoors but am very interested in Horticulture and this really helps. Thank you.
I grow inside as well. The barley cover can go outside or into a corner somewhere in/outta tent. Who cares bout stretching “grass” not growing it out for food. Just a way to burn the chemical nutes from the pot and get a jump on your organics journey. Hell use the pot outside for veggies or flowers next year. No salt buildup to worry bout.
I have pots outside that have weeds and grass growing in them. Will that be ok? I guess its good for the soil,… ?
Gonna be helpful fo sho but the barley gets ravenous. Better than buying seeds for just a couple.
Yeah, its nothing major, just a few pots.
