Light choice on a budget

Have you noticed if you had to add any supplimental light like some bright white LED’s or CFL’s?

Trying to understand this. I have a 4’x6’. For coverage 4-300 watt lights? If you use the watts used (135 per light) you really need 10? Which is it I have been through a bunch of threads and it keeps switching from watts in the name like the 300 above to the actual consumption of 132 watts. I am completely lost!

Since the above is an LED light, it’s LED chips that put out the power of a 300w light but only draws 132 from the plug. To figure out how much light you need in there you need to figure out your square footage of grow space, and then I think you multiply that by however many watts per square foot you want to grow with. I’ve read that some people go with 35w per square foot, and some people go with 50w per square foot. That formula should give you the right idea of how many light(s) you need in your area to grow properly.

So to figure lights, you use the 300 watt and not the actual watts used (132) ? Sorry for the dumb questions but big difference and I need to get soon

Hey man these aren’t dumb questions, it’s how you learn. And I don’t know if I can answer that question with a correct answer. I know I grow in a closet that’s like 3’x4’ and I’ve got the 300w GalaxyHydro light that we’ve been talking about on this thread and I love it.

I appreciate that, actually doing a 4x6 24 sf and 10 plants. I have been reading for hours and hours and when I think I understand the next posts goes the other way. Shooting fo 50 watts per sf

haha man I feel it for sure! I’ve been reading nonstop for who knows how long. There’s so much information to process that i have a tendency to over look things. I would say if your just starting out start with the basic stuff. Lights, water, and soil. Your best bet is trial and error, just start with 1 or 2 plants and find out what works the best for you and if you run into any issues just pop onto here and figure it out.

Sorry @rmireau wasn’t around last night
But looks like @Mrgreen3461 took care of you
When calculating led light most of us use actual watts now rated watts to size our lights and we aim for that 50 w per sq

I’m positive you get what you pay for when it comes to LED lights. Every one I’ve seen that is American made us huge money… I went with 2 - 600 watt Viparspectra brand full spectrum lights. I use them in a 40x96x78 inch grow tent. I also ended up purchasing a no name 1800 watt COB led for the red spectrum. The first two “full spectrum” lights I bought were mostly blue spectrum for the VEG cycle… here is a pic with the ordering info.

I just started three months ago. I was lucky enough to have a 400 Watt HPS ballast just sitting under my bed (from an LCD projector project), so all I needed was a bulb ($20 Home Depot) and a socket ($10 grow shop). My Northern Lights clone has done great in a 3’ by 3’ shower converted to grow closet.
