Keefe mining for oil. Trying something new. (To me)

So trying an experiment of a sort. Info is hard to find on this so wth?!
Took about 3z of apple fritter and ground it up like i smoke it. Dumped into my trim tray with 70 micron screen. Rubbed it around good and packed the weed that was left away. After a few times gathered the keefe (or however it’s spelled) and collected quite a lot!
My intention is to melt it into ethanol to filter out plant material. My hope is that i find less chlorophyll this way.
My goal is to find a simple way to extract without all the drama.
Eventually I’ll have everything I need in place. May be years.
Right now after everything Ive already tried, it seems like a way tip the balance a bit!
Besides, the weed thats left is plenty smokable! So i keep ALL the weed(minus keefe on a portion.) and hopefully get a cleaner wash! Hopefully a win/win! I’ll let ya know.

If extracting to remove chlorophyll you do not want to grind flower. Broken up is the way to go. Then freeze ethanol and do a short wash (ten minutes) using 190 proof.

Thats exactly what I’ve already tried, to the best of my ability at least. But 2 things… I don’t at present possess the means to do this effectively. And I find that to get a clean wash with what I have, I leave way more behind than i can afford. I have unique limitations on my growing hobby.
So I’m trying this in hopes of making it possible to make a clean wash without a lab lol.
If it works it will be amazing! If it doesnt im sure i can still use it in edibles. And did i mention, i still have all the weed? So at least if i fail i still haven’t lost anything.

You could produce your own 190 proof:nerd_face::nerd_face:

I did cold ethanol extraction with 8 grams of CBD kief
You will eliminate some of the “plant” taste by using kief but it will have a little bit of the taste
It will be gritty from the husks and ground material so a filter through a doubled up paper coffee filter should help
Make sure the filters are very wet with ethanol before filtering

Run fresh ethanol through the filters after you pass the tincture through
Get some of the cannabinoids left

Not sure if this helps

So i melted it into ethanol( everclear) still came out green as some predicted. But less so. Seems pretty strong! (Read sticky)
There was indeed a lot of plant material in the initial wash. Filtered it through my rig to 2 microns.
Doing it this way seems to have some advantages. Now have to learn jar decarb. I’ve always decarbed before extracting. im looking forward to refining it somewhat. My freezer doesn’t get below -10 or so. But freezing everything may still help. Finding a better way to break up material before hand should help as well. Put less plant material in the mix.
So i have a little better than the other way and it allows me to smoke what would otherwise be trash. Also it is a lot easier to me at least.

I do alcohol extracts. I read through these articles to get a bit better at getting clean results. There is also an article on jar tech decarb. Tons of good info. qwet - Home Extraction by IchiBanCrafter

Yeah! Really great information! No one to ask questions of however. Dudes kind of a jerk. I joined his face book group thinking it was a community but every time I’d post he’d lock my post and give me some bs reason. Nothing against the rules or anything like that. What ever.

Taking it slowly because of time and resources, but finally decided what im doing with it. Making vape oil.
Clearly i can do better from the start than i did, but i got way better results with less effort even with the mistakes I’ve made.

Next time i freeze everything before starting.

This is final scrub before evap. First run was indeed full of husks, but after filtering to 5 microns it was far less green than my best decarbed flower run. After adding 1/8 tsp of food grade carbon to it and running it through diatomaceous earth,it cleaned up nicely I’d say.

Is it necessary to decarb for vape oil? Or just partial decarb?

I see a hot plate in the pic. Is that how you’re reducing it?
I have in the past used a vacuum chamber with a hot plate, and cooling coils to remove and reclaim the ethanol. But I have always decarbed first. This being raw kief im now noticing the terpene aroma even over the alcohol smell! So I’m thinking to avoid heat this time and just let it evaporate. Just need to figure out if I need to decarb for vaping. If so I’ll do the “jar tech” thing.
So you’re growing cbd weed as well? What are the main benefits you find in this?

Sorry if I gave the impression I’m growing, still waiting for legalization
Every bordering state is legal, we are a laughing stock of the area
Rant is over
The jury is out on the decarb
The main claim is the heated coil decarbs much like combustion but the efficiency is in question
Some people reported better results with a decarb, partial decarb was used as a term but it seems to be a contradiction

Mainly extract 1:1 flower and hemp, sometimes kief when it’s cheap
Have access to refined rso for $13 (US) a gram, too cheap to pass up and perfect for edibles

5 grams in rich syrup makes a half teaspoon dose that lasts 6-8 weeks
Buy them 40-60 at a time

The electric stovetop is how I reduce, using a fan and nearby window to vent
Thinking of a lab still but my extracting is only 4-6 times a year with about 1-2 cups if ethanol at a time
This new concentrate market is insane

So i can read all the hype online and elsewhere, but I’m fairly new to all this. What is it you gain from using cbd? Trying to understand if its of some benefit to me as well. I figure if you go to the trouble to put it in there… gotta be a reason.

The 1:1 flower is a great entry level flower for people who are non users
Keeps the possibility of overdoing it for inexperienced people or beginners to a minimal risk
Pretty good for going out, mild buzz with a great chill effect
I’ve only been doing this for a couple of years so I’m playing catch up myself
New data suggests CBD may enhance the effect of THC but the ratio they had was 450mg CBD to 9mg THC
CBD has the anti inflammatory, THC seems to have pain management from my personal experience
More medical reports and anecdotal evidence suggests THC may have a much bigger role medically than CBD
