Journal 2: Upgraded Setup

I water/feed with jacks every day. full strength. in Promix. white widow

Thats what I was told to do so I did it. It was hard to water every day as this is my second grow and the first was in soil. So I was afraid i would over water them. Nope… I water with tons of runoff every day and they take it like a champ.

Now a more experienced grower may tell you different but I am just going off on what everyone here told me.

Better to water daily

Im just trying to understand, why are you using the word hydrophilic when I think its hydrophobic

“A hydrophile is a molecule or other molecular entity that is attracted to water molecules and tends to be dissolved by water. In contrast, hydrophobes are not attracted to water and may seem to be repelled by it.”

Please educate me

Brain fart. You are correct. Hydrophobic.

In the youtube video “Maximizing Cannabis Yields with Dr Bruce Bugbee”, he says he’s using a 20-10-20 fertilizer. He also says in the video that his nute mix is 1.3 EC, which is equal to 650 ppm.

His media recipe as @Myfriendis410 posted is correct:

50/50 pure peat and vermiculite, 40 grams of dolomite lime per cubic foot and 10 g of gypsum per.

His mix doesn’t really supply much nutes. Vermiculite provides silica. Dolomite lime and gypsum provide a bit of calcium and magnesium and ph correction (the lime).

I decided to try the 1.3 EC (650 ppm) with Happy Frog and AN nutes, every watering. Started in veg and plants did great, bumped it up to 1.5 EC (750 ppm) in flowering though, which also worked great, healthy plants, no deficiencies.

I’ll try Dr Bugby’s media mix and his choice of nutes at some point but enjoying coco too much right now.

Ive been reading this in every post and im like is it really hydrophilic :joy: Thanks

I gotta try that next round just 650ppm. I know its no bad to have burned tips but I like the look of a clean plant

650?! I’ve been giving my plants 1100 ppm every day  I felt if I gave that low I would start seeing issues. Maybe if it was on a system like auto pots or some other watering system that auto feeds or several times a day. But what do I know? not much. Ill be watching!

I also want to add 7 plants in 7 gallon pots, 4 in 5 gallon and 20 clones in 1 gallon… thats a good amount of water every day. Not that jack’s is expensive but if i can get away with less costs that is always a bonus.

He bumped it up to 750ppm during flowering just to give it a kick

He introduces vermiculite to provide additional magnesium. Dolomite Lime as a PH buffer which Gypsum does to a small extent and also provides calcium. Not that cal mag is hard to use but does jump your TDS when you mix it: that could otherwise be used for base nutes.

Thats bad assed right there! Never thought that was possible. Great job!

This dry sift Afghani hash tastes peppery and mouth watering, I wish I could smoke more that 2 hits! Alas it also has some punch and 3 hits is 1 hit too many for me.

Not what I got from the video, he went on about the silica that vermiculite provides. Vermiculite attracts and holds plant nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus but doesn’t actually provide any on it’s own from what I’ve read.

Thats correct, think of it as a sponge. Its very much like a sponge. Vermiculite breaks down pretty fast too. It is also less dense than perlite and as such tends to ( float out ) easily.

Somewhere in there he states the use of vermiculite to obviate the necessity of cal mag supplementing.

So turns out it tends to capture (sequester) calcium and magnesium and release back into medium. Due to it’s structure it has: “The hydration properties are controlled by the interlayer cations Mg2+ and minor amounts of Ca2” so captures and releases depending on charge state of aluminosilicate crystals swapping charges, depending on PH.

So I would say technically you are correct.

Do you think we could toss the peat and use buffed coco?

@Myfriendis410 maybe we could run this in an autopot… And get rid of the calcium deficiencys me and some others tend to get

Don’t see why not.

That’s what I was thinking…

Maybe next round I will try
50/50 buffed coco and vermiculite, 40 grams of dolomite lime per cubic foot and 10 g of gypsum per 5 gallon bucket.

Then continued feed via normal nutrients, it won’t be perfect but I will also run the same breed/strain auto in my normal mix

@Nicky @Myfriendis410 @Hellraiser As much as I enjoyed growing in Promix HP and learning about it, id like to switch it up for my third grow. What do you guys think? try out Coco or Bugbee’s recipe that you guys are talking about. I’ll be in fabric pots more than likely
