Is the time of flip to flowering in autos determined by genetics or grow conditions?

In my last grow (my first) I had 4 different autoflowering strains*, and they first showed pistils at 36, 37, 39 and 42 days after sprouting from coco.

  • Tangerine, Bruce Banner, White Widow and Critical, from Seed Supreme

I’m now doing my second grow (2 Northern Lights autos and 2 OG Kush autos, from 420FastBuds), and the two most advanced plants (one NL and one OGK) started showing pistils at day 27 and 28.

The only difference in growing conditions is that I switched from Fox Farms hydro nutes to General Hydroponics, and from 3-gallon to 5-gallon fabric pots.

Is the faster flip this time likely due to the strains (this time, the plants are all Indica dominant strains, last time they all had a bit more Sativa), or to my conditions?

Genetics. An auto will flower once it becomes sexually matured (usually between 4 and 7 weeks.)

It’s genetics, but flower can be initiated by a 12/12 cycle if they veg longer than anticipated.

Are Indica Autos generally faster to flower?

Sativas can take a little longer to ripen flower, but in terms of when an auto starts to flower is independent of whether it is an indica or a sativa.
