I am in zone 6b. Is it too late to start a seed outdoors?
I have a couple auto flowers if that makes a difference.
If it were me I would go for it.
You are good. In the N hemisphere I would say you have to have them popped by the solstice. Coming right up. Or it’s a waste of a seed outdoor. Like this weekend is the firm wall limit if the great indoors is not in your grow plans.
The catch is starting late it will be a smaller plant. It’s like skipping veg and going straight to 12/12 indoor. I know you said autos. What I mean is no time for bending, topping, fiming, mainlining, or manifolding. Just let it grow classic Christmas tree style.
I’ve never grown outdoors, only indoors. Typically I e grown photos indoors in 5 gallon pots and autos in 3 gallon pots.
What size would you recommend for an outdoor auto?
I am just gonna throw it in the pot and let nature takes it course, kind of a little experiment lol.
I would say use the 5, but if you only have 3gal not being used, I would not go buy another 5. Roll w the 3.
The deal with autos, is ideally you’d be hitting flower around now. Taking advantage of the long sunny solstice days and hot weather. The idea is to have big fat bud before the fall weather that gets bad.
All the photos growers eventually face weather issues with the bad weather. I hope that makes sense. I’m not saying don’t run the autos, you’re not growing them to their peak potential the longest day of the year for auto flowering. Like for next year…
@dmykins its worth a shot but in my opinion if you had an option between photo’s and autos to plant now, personally I would plant the photo the autos are really sensitive to inclement weather, nutrients and sometimes they grow just as long as a photoperiod. Photoperiods are much more hardy and forgiving outdoors and like what was said before if you put a photoperiod out now they will start flipping to flower the last week of July / beginning of August. Either way try it and get a feel for it!! Happy growing
I may only have autoflower seeds at this point. I have to take a look and see. I would want to use a 5gallon for photos, not sure if I have any left.
Either way my plan is to get something planted today.
If I did do a photo outside, would 7 gallon be better than 5?
What state you in? I would be glad to mail you a happy solstice card w some reg outdoor seeds taped in….
You can PM me on growingfruit.org
Same format as here. No strings attached photo reg seeds.
Thank you! I am good for now, I have a couple purple haze seeds I’m going to give a shot. I just planted in a cup and have a 7 gallon fabric pot to transplant when the time is ready.
I’m pretty experienced with indoor growing, never grew outdoors other than decorative flowers/veggies.
No worries, I love purple haze. If you ever change your mind feel free to ask. I love making seeds more than flower.
I am running some dj short BB x jilly bean crosses I have been playing with. My beans are all for outdoor. That’s what made me think of you. I mainly select for mold resistance. Those had some nice purple phenos last year…
That’s awesome! How much more difficult or challenging is outdoor vs indoor? What would you say is the one major thing to watch out for?
It’s situational. Some it’s bugs, some it’s slugs, some it’s cops or rippers.
Me it’s mold from the seattle fall rains. Even dry days, the morning dew rolls in every night as the nights get cool in the fall. I have had more failure than success historically. Had to get scientific about 18 years ago and clone and cross winners that occasionally don’t turn into mold sticks in the rain…
That dj short blueberry could take a downpour. Jillybean was probably my next best. So it seemed like a mold resistant match made in heaven.
Here it is flowering in the rain.
