@Cannabian Usually that’s true. However… they can get extremely finicky when the temps go up in summer and every time you feed them, the food decomposing just heats their home up THAT much more! They will escape and you’ll find dead worms stuck to your garage floor. I freeze bottles of water and space them out over the entire bin by digging holes to drop the frozen water bottles straight down into, providing a kind of cooling tower for your little gardening partners to beat the heat!
@scylents I try to mix it up. Also: you DEFINITELY want to try to bury their food a couple inches under their bedding because if you don’t, you will have fruit flies and all kinds of unwanted pests hanging out in your worm bin. A well-maintained bin has almost no smell, except the earthy smell of soil.
never had it happen, the worms are in a double container under our sink. Been there for years! We remove some eggs and worms and introduce them into the garden every clean up.
You know about the method of moving ALL the food (and POSSIBLE food too) to one side of the bin and bury most of it a couple inches deep at least. That lets you harvest castings and screen for cocoons because almost EVERY worm with half a worm brain (not asking for string theory) will follow the food. Important to starve the bin a tad and then feed the side opposite the side you want to harvest. Bury the food 2-3” deep (not too wet… only just moist) and keep it 100% confined to the side across from your harvest side. After a few days, almost ALL worms (wrigglers, I assume?) will be with the chow. Sprinkle some used coffee grounds (Starbucks will give you garbage bags full of premium grinds if you just ask. They support green and it saves them on trash bill. Get some and mix them in with next feeding ![]()
Also… it’s the perfect season where I am, but I don’t know about you. My worms FAVORITE FOOD (and many others, from stories…) is pumpkin rinds with a tad of flesh. It’s crazy but it’s almost an aphrodisiac. Seems to increase my colony every time fall rolls around. Probably the naturally protective temperatures also, but
…
Well Ive got fruit flies already!! ![]()
However I know those came from my compost collector under the sink. There are almost always flies down there… ![]()
Thankfully it’s outside at the moment. We have a few more weeks before the risk of freezing sets in… I’ll follow that method next time and make sure it’s ‘fly free’ material. I’ll use some cardboard. Thanks for the insight guys!! @Jaystr0 @Cannabian
I scrubbed the tent with peroxide and water mix. Lots of crap accumulating in there, but it should be a clean space to restart in.
The zkittlez autos are on the left there. Not sure how big they’re gonna get but I see now that I should have a decently full tent in a few weeks time. ![]()

Makes me think that I’m gonna have, date I say, too much weed on my hands in a few weeks time. If the autos yield well I need to slow down. ![]()

LOL Monk, I see that comment got you stirred up, and I love it!
This I really like!!
I actually took the seedlings out. I think they need another couple days before they get 18 hours of artificial light.
But they are healthy and sprouting by the hour. ![]()

Peroxide baths for the plants tonight.
Also an impulse decision to top the zkittlez. Not sure it was a great idea, but that question will be answered in a few weeks.
