I’ve noticed that many suggest transplanting to bigger pots several times during a grow. How do you do that successfully? It seems to me that every time you do it your taking a chance of killing the plants.
I go from a Solo cup to a 10" pot and then to a 10-gallon pot. I do so because it allows me to bury the plant up to its neck each time it is transplanted. It helps establish a stronger root system (roots will emit from the nodes that you have buried) and provides a good, solid base for the plant. I’ve never killed a plant doing it. I’ve never experienced even a temporary wilt of any kind. If you don’t disturb the root ball much each time you transplant the risk to the plant is very low and the benefits are very good.
I grow photos and would be more careful with autos since you don’t know when they might start flowering.
When you do this does the soil stay with the roots or fall back into the pot you are pulling it from?
I transfer the whole root ball. A root ball will stay intact if the soil is slightly damp.
Thank you. Makes sense. My main fear has always been that all the soil will fall away and I will have nothing but dangling roots to deal with.
Damn if thats not the best, clear, concise reasoning and explaination i can remember! On any subject.
I try to give people the ‘why’ when ever I can to make the point relatable.
You do a fine job of it.
