You should also wear a tight fitting dust mask if handling dry perlite to stop the dust particles getting into your lungs and damaging the membranes.

If you use perlite, make sure it’s wet/ damp before opening the bag and scooping it out. The best way to do this is to use a cake fork and poke a few small holes in the bottom of the bag. Then make a small opening at the top of the bag and put a garden hose in it. Let the bag fill with water and drain out through the holes in the bottom. Do this a couple of times and then the perlite is much safer to use.
Try to do this on a lawn so the perlite dust goes into the soil and won’t be disturbed.

I have a 5 gallon bucket that I drilled little holes making a strainer. I pour the whole bag of perlite into the bucket and run my hose through it to get rid of all the dust before I put the perlite in my soil.

Just be careful pouring it into the bucket. There is lots of fine dust in the bag that can escape into the air.
