~OKM- Another acronym I don’t know… NFT system?
~OKM- I don’t have a Net Pot. The top bucket is full of Hydrocorn only…
You really should really get a ppm meter
~OKM- Can you Give me a little more information?

Google “NFT hydroponic system” - you will find some examples. Here’s one:
NFT stands for “Nurtient Film Technique”:
"Nutrient Film Technique, or NFT, is a popular and versatile hydroponics system. It is similar to Ebb and Flow in that the system uses a pump to deliver fertilized water to the grow tray and a drain pipe to recycle the unused nutrient solution. The difference is that in NFT the nutrient solution is continuously flowing over the roots. This is accomplished using gravity. The grow tray is placed at an angle to allow the water to flow down towards the drain pipe, and a new solution is constantly being pumped into the high end of the tube.
NFT is an active system, meaning it relies on moving parts to work. Passive systems such as Wick Systems have no moving parts.
The nutrient solution flows in a thin film over the roots, ensuring that they are watered and fed but not completely soaked. The thin film ensures that the upper part of the roots will remain dry and have access to oxygen in the air."
Haha alright no problemo
PPMs are a measurement of how many minerals/nutrients are in your water. Distilled water would have a PPM of 0 (I think). Most tap water has a PPM around 100. Water from a dehumidifer (condensate) usually has a PPM of 10-25.
PPM definition:
“This is an abbreviation for “parts per million” and it also can be expressed as milligrams per liter (mg/L). This measurement is the mass of a chemical or contaminate per unit volume of water. Seeing ppm or mg/L on a lab report means the same thing.”
During a hydroponic grow, you will feed your plant nutrients at different levels depending on the age and stage of the plant’s life. The amount of nutrients can be measured with a PPM/TDS Meter. It basically uses an electrical current to determine how many minerals/contaminants are in the water.
Your nutrient vendor should have a schedule for what levels of PPMs to give (and how that translates into an actual amount of their nutrients) depending on the plant’s lifecycle. For example, here is one for General Hydroponics 3 part nutrients:
You can find a TDS/PPM meter on Amazon:
@okmatthew By net pot I just ment the bottom of the growing medium. Can be a pot or bucket.
Go onto Amazon and type in ppm meter. They will pop up all over the place. It just helps you keep track of the nutrients that’s in the water.
I’m sure there is some info on here about using one. It is super simple.
@Bogleg I was considering a NFT system with 5" pipe but all the cloggs that could (possibly happen) turned me off lol
Yeah - I went super simple with a basic DWC bubble bucket system. I am going to build a recirculating DWC system this winter I think.
Oh man you will love the recurculating dwc. Are you think just plain old recurculating or a Under current system? I just built a Under current system and absolutely love it
Funny you ask… I have been following your undercurrent system thread and was planning on following your lead. ![]()
Go to the nutrient page in the shop and click on feeding schedule. Also; I put a breakdown of measures in the GrowFAQs section.
Ah HA!
I See…
Here’s what I’ve Got… AND What I think is what @snowman is telling me…
Oh and I forgot to illustrate an AirStone In the Water As Well…
“OK, I Think I got it now” (My Cousin Vinnie

Chat with You folks later!
Cheers Y’all! ![]()
@snowman I already bought this one but I didn’t know what it did yet… ![]()

I Thank You @latewood
I am NOT Able to log in.
I sent a Detailed Message to Stacy this evening. Could You Please check on that?
Later…
Yes that is exactly what you can do!
Haha that’s hilarious. You should start using it now lol. Test your water right out of the faucet and adjust with nutrients accordingly.
P.S. don’t trust that meter roo much. I had that one and it was not correct at all. At least for me. Ordered a big jug of ph testing liquid and never looked back.
Good luck with your grow! Keep us updated! @okmatthew
I did check it with the Ph Testing Fluid after and it was spot on…
It’s strange to me how the Ph changes in 24 hours?
Yipee! Both sprouts are Still GOOD today! ![]()
@latewood said “Go to the nutrient page in the shop and click on feeding schedule. Also; I put a breakdown of measures in the GrowFAQs section.”
Could you post it or provide me with a link?
I’m having login issues…
The link will be on the product page for the nutrient you purchased:
On that page, under the Description section there is a “dosage” section with a link for feed schedules for hydro and soil.
That’s GREAT! Thanx @bogleg!
Once you dial in the nutes (keep a log book) and get familiar with how your water changes it will be like brushing your teeth in the morning lol.
By keeping a log book I mean keeping track of growth stages and what ppm they like. Dates are key. I have i binder full of notes and a white board to do weekly ppm and ph checks. Then I can look back to see what happened if something goes wrong.
You should see it when the plants have problems the board will be full of different colors lol.
Great Idea’s @snowman… ![]()
I’m a White Board Believer Too… In Fact I when I converted my 35’ Blue Bird School into an RV, I covered the Inside Walls and Ceilings with it… Very nice and Super easy to clean…

I’ll Create my ‘CAPTAIN’S LOG’ - Today…
Do you Ever CHANGE the Water or just keep adding to it as it evaporates?
If I put Cinnamon around the trunk for bugs etc… as Today’s News Letter from Robert Suggests, Won’t it make the “product” taste like cinnamon?
Haha that’s funny! My dad converted a school bus into a motor home too, back in the day. I remember un-bolting all the seats from the floor. And if I remember correctly the side of the seat (wall side) just slipped into a notch. Ours didn’t have square ends it was more round. Looked like a twinky for a while until we painted it lol.
When the plants are very small they use a small amount of water so I go 2 weeks. Then as I notice the water level dropping ( plants drinking gallons )
I change to 7-10 days. I don’t think there is any specific watering scedual for dwc. You SHOULD top off with fresh ph’ed water every day when vigorisly growing, you can always add nutrients in with the fresh water as well if the ppm dropped below your happy medium ( I usually give a 50-100ppm to fluctuate, depending on how she’s growing ).
Also before you go on vacation and no I’m not spying on you just giving a heads up
lol. Put your plants and water to the test. If you cannot touch them for three days just pretend you are gone, monitoring water levels, ppm ranges and also ph. Then before you go you will know what to adjust your water too before you leave. Leaving you with ease of mind knowing your babies are just fine.
About the cinnamon thing, I have never heard about such a thing. I wouldn’t recommend it to you since you are top feeding. It would just end up in your water and possibly cause fluctuations or something. But again I have never tried it. May have to take a peek.
Are you having bug problems right Now? @okmatthew
