How to test runoff correctly

Ok. This is my third grow and this has happened all three times. I swore I was gonna get it right but I’m still missing the mark.

Two days ago I fed both with the fox farm trio. Going in ppms were 1100, coming out they were 1800.

Feeding before that was 700 coming out 1200.

So I know they were hungry but this last feed has been two days and the lower leaves have gotten markedly worse more quickly.

Ita been two weeks since I started feeding with the trio and I’ve fed three times. I’m planning on doing the sledgehammer flush next time they dry out.

My concern is that at 1800 runoff at 4th week flowering shouldn’t 1800 runoff be enough to keep them from being underfed?
I’m using .7 scale.

One thing I’m unsure about is maybe I’m not taking enough runoff and the reading is too dense? I don’t think I want to measure all the runoff collectively as it may be diluted with the over pour?

Should I feed more? How do some of you measure runoff most accurately?

Do the lower leaves show sign of under or overfeeding?

The tops of plants look great but the bottom leaves are crisping progressively.

Thank you

They dont look that bad. But if 1100 was put in and 1800 came out then higher than 1800 was in there. Consisting of unused nutes built up affecting pH. I think that sets the wheels in motion for “off”-feeding and nutrient imbalance.

I’d get numbers from 20 - 25% runoff, the tail end of it, watered really slowly, using RO or distilled. Then decide about flushing and feeding.

Hey, also FF is known for salts build-up and swings. Flushes often needed.
To reduce that, I seen this suggeated by good growers… For next grow… feed at lesser strength, always til very soaked with lots of runoff, effectively replacing as much as you can with new nutes

To clarify, you’re suggesting using ro water and measure the tail end of 20-25% runoff from input. How many ounces would you capture to test?

What parameters would I use to signify need to flush?

When I’m feeding what is best way to measure runoff. Same?

@Chudo i would recommend doing a flush and then feed it right after.
You’re likely going to face some PH swings later with that size container. Too late for a transplant, but keeping the medium properly hydrated, and watering to run off will keep salt build up to a minimum.

About a cup of run off to measure, with but if you put a gallon of nutrients in, you should be getting approximately a half quart of run off or more.

Would a regular plain water flush be preferred over using sledgehammer?

Sledgehammer would take less gallons, I’ve used both. You’re probably looking at a PH issue and would flush the medium down to around 300 PPMs or until the PH is in a range of 6.3-6.8. Follow up with a good feeding of 800-1000 using the 500 scale on the TDS pen :love_you_gesture:
