@Donaldj I will turn down humidifier after I get this dimmer
If I showed you the white dust film they make you would understand all the Calcium in the water turns to fine air borne dust not so bad if fan is pulling fairly slow it will settle before ever getting into it
I ruined a filter by sucking that dust in.
You can buy little Arm @ Hammer things you drop in the humidifier and it helps to pull the minerals out.
My Air-O-Swiss in my house, although a bit pricey has an excellent filter and produces no powder.
I think I will need a little help here.
I wired it up and it turned on but I couldnāt turn it off and my breaker tripped when I turned the dial.
See I have a black green and white wire on my power cord but the dimmer has 2 blacks and a green.
So I looked at the instructions and chose the black wire on the dimmer that was closest to the green to connect all black to. Then I connected the white to the black that was away from the other 2 wires on the dimmer (see pic) I donāt think I did it wrong but I tripped the breaker so obviously I did. @Donaldj
I got it!!! Well I havenāt done it yet because Iām need another electrical nut. Iāll be right back to report
Ok
- Iām not dead
- The breaker didnāt trip
- The carbon filter is running
- Yet the dimmer doesnāt seem to dim, it appears to be on or off and no dimming
they are very touchy you need to slowly adjust from on to slower
your nuetral or white should bypass dimmer entirely ground or green is to green reason it comes with 3 nuts. black is only one that matters. connect one to fan one to plug. When you do adjust it takes lots of power to start any motor so start with it high then very slowly ease it lower it will take a bit to slow down some so sound exactly the same when it settles lower slightly more and wait again repeat until you get to point it stops then mark restart and set dial close to middle.
I am OCD and patient so to me it works fine a proper speed controller isnāt too much and is simpler to set but I have 3 fans which I run with dirt cheap dimmer just like the one you bought
so I know they work just isnāt overly noticeable to the ears when setting them for first couple times
Ok so I did it as above picture shows and it only turns on and off no in between.
If I followed your @Donaldj advice I modified it by terminating each neutral white wire (with an electrical nut) and then it didnāt turn on at all (but I saw the amber light after depressing it, does that mean off?) regardless both methods donāt work itās either on or off. I must be missing something.
It never stops when I dim it just stays on full speed.
Thatās the method I described nuetrals together black hot through switch amber light means off very odd it will sound like full speed takes time to slow and if you adjust too fast it wonāt work. There is the possiblity your nuetral is actually reversed in the outlet? try reverse white to black
Being AC power it wonāt hurt anything will or will not work what dimmer does is limit power past it in circuit so if it is after fan on nuetral return it would be on or off before it should slow it. Some houses are home owner wired and plugs can on occasion be wired backwards by mistake? Also quite possible fan is wired backwards by mistake new guys first day??
Ok I know it must be simple but adjust too fast and it wonāt work? That sounds complicated. So you are saying take white from power cord (which one? there is 2 whites one for each side of the plug) and connect it to one of the black on the dimmer? What about the other black on the power cable?
The fact you say itās odd is making me less confident
I have the dial turned all the way to the left and I still hear the fan
treat white wires like you previously did Black and splice blacks form cords together ground remains the same
the other possible issue could be you fried dimmer when you tripped breaker but we arenāt there yet
Actually @Donaldj you may be right about frying the dimmer. It would not prevent the passthru of current but would it affect the off light? I really appreciate your help and since itās so simple I think I should go to Home Depot and get another dimmer but let me first reread your post. Thanks again
I got a slide style dimmer which is easier to set and yes if it were fried it would no longer restrict it would be on or off being a coil resistor inside it
So you are saying all black gets spliced together? All 4 of them? Iām about to hop in the car and just spend the 14$ on a new one to rule that out. @Donaldj
Thatās it Iām off lol
many thanks @Donaldj !!!
Go with slide option way easier to adjust ![]()
@Oldstoner I think it will work great that way and you will have more control over temps and humidity at least I do and Iāve never had to run either fan full blast and I can adjust and keep my temps on a set number on demand , I love it .
@Donaldj yep done !
Took me 45 seconds to do it after getting the slider I already hear and smell a difference. Humidity is low though (37rh) so I need to turn up the humidifier
