How long do you wait on a seed to sprout?

I put an autoflower seed in a glass of water for 18 hours. It’s shell cracked open, u could see green underneath. A little white sprout had popped out, but it was very tiny. I put it one inch under happy frog soil, which I pre watered with almost 2 gallons (5 gallon pot), the soil was damp. I left seed heating mat over the top of the pot, and spray the middle of pot with a mist bottle a couple times a day.

It’s been 3 and a half days and nothing has sprouted yet.

Did I do something wrong? Should I keep waiting? How long until you give up and consider the seed dead?

Alot of the water drained out the fabric pot when I pre watered it. To me it didn’t really feel that wet, but maybe it was.

I was also thinking I buried it too deep. How long would you give it before you think it’s a lost cause? Is there anything I can do now to improve its chances?

I punch a hole with a screwdriver and plant seed 1/4 inch under media, tap root straight down. They usually pop thru next day. I’d give it a week at most but it may not be able to break through that deep.

Can take a week sometimes. Adding a lil warmth can move things along.

I have had you carefully dig up a few seeds i planted to deep. They sprouted under the soil but were struggling to come up above.

Dug them up and replanted with no issue.

You could carefully uncover the seed to see if it’s trying to come up, but very carefully. Have done that in the past when i thought things ended up a bit to deep.

No worries yet. I have some come up in days. Have had some pop in 2 weeks. Patience young padewan. No water if moist. None. Remove that mat. Place under pot. Heat the soil.

+1. I don’t believe sprouts need light to know which way is up, but I can’t think of a reason to block it. The photons may help cue and encourage them to keep growing.

It sprouted!

It looks like it came up and did a U turn back into the soil, is that normal?

How much light do I give it now?
How much water?

And there she is. Grats on the youngun. Gently dig a little and see if her green is under soil. If it is super gently right her. Spray a dome with water and cover a couple days till she starts second set of true leaves Is what I do. Unless your rh is 60% plus then can leave her uncovered. Gentle is the key word.

Should I use my grow light at this point or would a regular light bulb suffice until it grows more?

Not sure of your lighting, but typically use my light setup at about 50% the first week and carefully increase over the next few weeks. There’s some crazy cool info on lighting you can look up using the search function. That’s really one of of not the most important thing in your set up other than a PH & TDS pen. I put those 2 things at about the same weight in terms of importance.

Grow light. Has the spectrum she wants. 30% or so 20-24 inches up almost any light unless 1 of the friggin brighter than the sun HLG monsters. If she stretches give a bit more till she sits and tosses leaves.

I have a 100 watt Phlizon light, I’ll set it around 30% like you said. I have two other 100w lights for when it’s bigger.

When testing humidity where do you test? If I put my sensor directly on the moist soil it reads like 80%+ but the room humidity is much lower.

Do you give it water every day? I’ve been using a mist bottle.

Is 18 hours of light good enough or should I do 24?

I just recently learned this lesson! Less is best! Leave the dome on and as long as the soil is damp leave her be! I always want to water mine, i am a chronic over-waterer. But we must not.

You want to try and read the humidity in the air, not of the soil. If you can hang it that works well.

18/6 for lighting. Is this the only plant you have going? What size area you growing in? That seems low in terms of light.

Those are off a few points but work good in jars. My 3x3 i have a magnetic meter on pole about 4 feet up. 5x5 i have a meter with a long probe wire i hang in middle at canopy. 20" for that light at 50% i would think. Low wattage.

Absolutely not. She needs to reach out the roots. We keep her alive but she is pulling it from the air more. EASY DROWN!!! Sorry that is a serious issue. Damping off kills more seedlings than all other things combined. If worried going to die of thirst spray inside a clear dome and cover. Any watering will be minimal and not directly on the stem. Heat is good now. 75-85 she will like. Leave her be. Lookie no touchie and let her grow her legs. When ready to veg you will know in a 2 or 3 day span when she takes off. Patience now and little interference besides environment and light. Just my thoughts and how i typically go from here. Others should chime in if i missed something or screwed up. No nutes.
