Didn’t want to clutter up your thread with this…

Are you familiar with knob and tube wiring?

I have a question as I am hoping not to pay an electrician once again to come out for nothing…

I have this cap in my living room ceiling…

It has two wires…black and white.

Neither has power.

Which is where the job of installing a ceiling fan ended last time…I ordered some electrical testing things…as the electrician didn’t have things like …a tone generator…to follow wires.

I followed the signal to this:

Not the hole…I made that and found the outlet box.

This has two wires…one hot… the other comes down from the ceiling.

Did I find everything?..or must I follow the white wire in the ceiling as well ?..it’s not hot.

My assumption is that the white wire should be investigated…it probably doesn’t have power as it was disconnected when the house was mostly rewired.

However, after looking at knob and tube diagrams…the hot wire to the switch then the black up to the light hole… might be enough…this! Is why I design mechanical and tooling machines powered by presses.

I know enough to replace and fix stuff safely…but it must be pretty common sense stuff.

The knob and tube wiring should be removed or at least abandoned and labeled as such. It sounds like part of it was already removed as there should be a black hot wire and white or gray neutral wire pairs with only the hot going down to and back from switches. I would encourage you to run Romex back to the electrical panel for your ceiling fan. Of course, use Romex for the switch leg.

I appreciate your advice…I was under the same thought…the wiring looks sooo clean…not even dry rotten…like the house I grew up in…that it gave me hope.

I intend on rewiring this…but the ceiling tile removal and ceiling repair after removing the wooden strip they attach to…has me putting it off. For now.

I’ll figure out what breaker the hot in the switch wall is and turn it off if possible.

Thank you for your help!

Oh, I’ve been on this job and is exactly the reason I don’t do side work anymore…

The hot is at the switch box location along with the switched wire, and the switched wire and neutral for fan are sitting unterminated in the ceiling.

Everything is there assuming the neutral in ceiling goes back to neutral bus. But I wouldn’t use it either.

Is the whole house knob and tube or is some updated? My next question is breaker panel or fuses?

Every wire out of the breaker box is new…which is what confused me.

Glad…the house I grew up in had fuses…it was a pain.

One circuit probably not to bad to get in. Depending on where your panel is anyway

Good evening @SausageMahoney

How are you? Enjoying the holiday weekend?

Was feeling a bit better, but put together the last of the lawn furniture as well as mowed and now pretty sore.

I hope to have an update out in the next couple of days. Got most everything refined on the Ai and the four DLI tracking areas are almost done.

I’ll send you a copy before publishing; if you don’t mind?

Beautiful! I don’t know what I would do with all of the flat space. Mine is 45 degrees except the driveway. :vulcan_salute: :man_mage:

It’s harder than I thought to find a good large birdhouse to go on the pole with the mystery machine.
