Good day Growmies
With all the new grow tech that has been developed in recent years, AI has got to be the most intriguing. Folks like AC Infinity appear to be leading the charge with many others right behind them. From cameras and lights to fans and CO2 regulation; every aspect of your tent environment can now be controlled with AI assistance.
What are thoughts on implementing AI in your grow?
Im with ya @Bentstick. Not ready for it in the grow room but use the crap out of chat and co at work. More as a time saver and a search engine since googs is trash now.
I’m not completely free of AI but I’m not a fan of network connected devices. There’s no Alexa, ring doorbell, cameras, smart thermostats, or anything like them in my house. Closest thing we have are a couple of 10+ year old smart tv’s from before I knew better. I’m sure my phone tracks me enough, so I’m not helping them any.
I agree about the network access, that’s why I built my own system running in my tent and never touching the cloud (nor vice versa) - sovereign data only. It uses AI heavily - constantly in fact - a computer inside the tent is running its own AI models, trained specifically for cannabis cultivation. It is programmed to discard broscience and community myths - it can only answer based upon what the scientific community has already published, and upon the data collected from the actual plants in your tent. That removes the slop. When there’s not enough confidence to make a call, the system says it “can’t tell” instead of generating some guess that sounds good. Just the facts, ma’am.
What it does best is the boring stuff. It logs air temp, RH and leaf temp every minute, runs the fan and humidifier off those numbers, and keeps the grow log I’d never keep by hand, and I can go away for the weekend and afterwards tell what happened when I was gone. I ran into a humidity-related deficiency early on in the training caused by VPD miscalculation (repaired) so it learned as I built it, and it still is.
Really happy I did it. But you are right - the generic chat AI web pages will feed you slop - you gotta use a model trained on actual science rather than just any old web page found on the internet.
For use as a research facilitator it is great.
For use as a grow partner that will keep you out of a ditch not so much.
Hell it can not even find seeds without reminding the agent to check stock as it just skims websites looking for keywords.
The problem with unfettered assistance is the pool of knowledge is way to broad and included faulty data.
Tailored properly it works well for new growers and for growers changing it up
with a new setup.
It still has a long way to go for being able to snap a photo and ask it what’s wrong.
I refuse to use it, for one, I’m hardheaded and two, I don’t trust it in the least. For those that like it, wonderful, it’s not for me. I was growing this shit before AI, plan on growing right on without artificial intelligence, hell, I have natural stupidity on my side!
Appreciate the responses so far Growmies
Sounds like the majority of us are somewhere in the orthodox range when it comes to AI.
My advice to anyone looking to use it, just dont ever tell AI your dreams and private thought, that’s privileged ground
You know I started by trying to use AI but it always is trying to make you happy. You have to remember it’s a language model so all it wants to do is please you. It will give you the wrong direction and really it will believe that it’s doing you the right thing but it’s totally screwing you. It’s a good backup. But the best thing is your gut you know that.
Because unfortunately nothing is stealthily anymore. We had to get phones that we can’t even take the batteries out of now. This goes on and on as you know. It sucks I miss the 90s
Like I said, AI is a language model that is there to please you even though it has the whole internet that is disposal it will steer you the wrong way thinking it is doing the right thing. And it does not keep up with time.
You can turn off that part of the interactions.
I run my agent in what I call the Vulcan Science Academy mode. It has zero courtesy and does not try to suggest other topics or tell me anything to " increase user interactions of a positive nature".
All that can be turned off and the agent will do a much better job when you do so.
The LLM agents that you can modify to suit are all pay to use systems. I do not think you can turn off any of the free browser agent settings.
Thank you for the heads up. I mean I’m not going to lie…the AI is nice to talk to you every now and then since it does have so much access to the internet. But mine did steer me wrong during about week 4 on watering.. and I knew better.
