An inexperienced and uninformed first attempt at growing

Welcome all, as the title suggests I really have no idea what I am doing. Just a man with some seeds, a dream, and the willingness to try and fail to hopefully succeed eventually. So far the journey has not been pretty. Beware I can be long winded.

The story so far. I started off with gathering some seeds from some locally acquired bud. I have somewhat of a mentor in this area who encouraged me to start my own grow. Honestly I just put some seeds in a paper towel, wet them, and put them under a kitchen sink light having no idea what would happen or the journey I was about to head down. (spoiler: I am idiot and you will have a headache from my stupidity as well lol.)

So far it was going well, I got the seeds to germinate, so I transferred them to cups with just some basic “grow your seeds” dirt from the local hardware store.

So far we were going well. this process took a few weeks getting there. It was slow going as at the time I did not have a grow light or any equipment what so ever. But we got them to come up!

Fast forward a few weeks. I bought a “cheap” grow lamp off of amazon. still not knowing what I was doing plants were very tall as they were trying to reach to the light, (yes that is a racoon skull, my wife likes dead things)

In an attempt to get more light out of this tiny useless lamp I deicide to use an emergency reflective heat blanket and put it in a bucket as a makeshift tent so to speak to help reflect light and help the plants grow. Yes I know it was a stupid idea but I was doing the best I could with as little as possible, just unsure if this growing thing was even worth trying.

At this point everything while hobbling along, was starting to go well. The plants had started to produce leaf’s. They seemed to be doing okay in the bucket around this time is when i started to think this might be a good idea and something worth investing in. I started thinking about getting a better light, possibly a tent depending on how the grow light went.

Fast forward another week and I got an amazing deal on a 600w vivosun led light and 4in inline duct fan with carbon filter for 100$. I have finally acquired an actual grow light.
So at this point still no tent but its going somewhat well. I got the light setup with my cooler/bucket/blanket combo.

At this point the grow, seems to be going well so of course its time to buy a tent right? lets save that for a part 2!
If you have read this far i appreciate you.

And we appreciate you and your new exciting adventure. We got your back when you need. Also, welcome to the family.

Now that you have that light, discard that reflective material. The light is going to be more intense than they’re used to and it’s not necessary as you want airflow to your soil.

Part 2: ITS TENT TIME RIGHT!?

Around this time some of the more keen eyed of you will have noticed something, that 600w light is a little to close to the plants lol that will come into play in a bit, but for the time being let’s talk about “the tent” an essential part of a indoor grower dream right?

So I went to Amazon of course! The best place to buy everything for your planting needs! I got a 2ft by 2ft grow tent by melon farm, just something cheap to get me started.
It came in the mail and I was so excited, I rushed to put up the tent as soon as it came in the mail! Unfortunately we ran into our first big problem. I RIPPED THE TENT PUTTING IT TOGETHER!

While not perfect I got it put together, got the venting tubing, charcoal filter, inline duct fan and fan installed in the tent in the closet of growing!

At this point I transfer the plants and light as well to the tent! I was so happy and excited I made sure to vent the tent with the rip at the bottom. I am so excited I am gushing over my new setup!

So let’s fast forward 24 hours.

This is where my idiotic ways really come through, in my ignorance, I had not vented the tent enough, closed it into a closet, and had the light less than 30 inches from the plants…… let that sink in.
I went to open the tent and found it vacuum sealed shut….
At this point I am ready to cry as I open the tent and see this.

They were fried like chicken, it got way too hot in there, and with no air flow I pretty much had killed them all. I was thinking this all was a waste, I just messed up so bad my tall beautiful plants are tiny, shriveled, and bone dry….

I threw open the tent door, watered them as quickly as I could, yes I noticed the mold on the cups as well at the time I didn’t know how to treat it, it was the because the cups were made of cardboard.

Sigh all that work, weeks of work gone in 24 hours. I am sure they are dead, I leave the tent open over night. Fast forward a couple days it’s become evident that two are definitely dead and not coming back,
I decided to make a decision for better or worse to move them out of the tent, cut off the dead leafs and hopefully save the small plants.

They have some new growth so I am hopeful if I leave them under the old grow light for a few days and let them be they will continue to improve.
It’s been a week or two of this and while small they are alive.

I decide it’s time to transplant them into actual pots and I bought generic gardening dirt that wasn’t for seedlings as at this point I am sure they are not getting enough food. They are tiny, and even after a week the leafs are small still. I decided to trim the tall one down and cut off the dead purple part of the plant down to the new growth.

And we reach where we are today. I have messed up several ways, honestly I should have put them in happy frog dirt but I am broke and trying my best.

I have made several mistakes I know. I have gotten the light up 30 inches, I have the fan on them but further away and hopefully they are able to pull through. If these 3 make it I will be one proud plant dad.
I do have the tent wide open as I am afraid of it getting hot in there again and they don’t really smell right now.

Hopefully they live and I hope you have enjoyed my idiotic story so far. I appreciate anyone who has read this far. I am trying my best. If you have any advice feel free to comment, I will try to keep you guys updated.

I posted a part 2 with an update to where I am at now, I did end up getting rid of it due to getting a tent. But if you read part two you will see the issues that came with that as well. I appreciate the support! thank you -bat

You can remove the carbon filter until you’re flowering. There’s no need for it. Leave the exhaust fan going for airflow but the filter isn’t doing anything for you at this point.

And be sure to open enough flaps for the tent to breathe.

Welcome to the neighborhood. Your story is probably one that a lot of us have lived. Hang in there. The great growers here will help you succeed. Happy growing :victory_hand:t3::blush:

Just an update guys @kw_Bat, I got the little guys in the tent with light for 18 hours. The tent door is wide open and the fan is moving air around in it, they seem to be feeling better and are enjoying the new dirt, pots, being back up under the grow light, and plenty of air. The carbon filter and fan are still in the tent but they are off, I didn’t see a point in disconnecting them.

The set back with air frying them, has unfortunately set me back quite a bit, I am worried about how tiny they are considering their age. I think they should be around 50 days old and still this tiny. I really messed them up sadly.

It can take 2 or 3 weeks to pull out of a stunted growth situation.

They will likely put off it.

They’re not auto plants so you have all the time to turn them around. They’ve already turned a corner so stay on this path.

I agree @BobbyDigital

Sure do. The joys of photo. Even if they kinda go slow can grab clones when just big enough and grow them out. The clones will thrive just fine. Welcome aboard.

Hey @UNINFORMEDBAT , if possible, try to get a more natural light on your plants when taking pictures. Easier to see for diagnosis purposes. The blurple color can hide things. Even a flashlight will help. A little setback perhaps on the front end, but with everyone on here, I feel pretty sure that you will finish strong. Rooting for you.

I don’t know if this is any better but I attempted to take photos with just the flash. I appreciate the support!

New growth is looking better. The last one is going to take some time to recover.
