Organic is fine so long as it isn’t a Miracle Grow product. MG and cannabis don’t get along very well for a couple of reasons. Stay away from anything that says “moisture control” or “feeds for x months.”
HLG makes good lights, as do Fluence and Bridgelux. Stay away from the cheap Amazon “burple” lights. The ads they run on Amazon are misleading at best and the reviews are manipulated by the sellers.
Fabric pots breathe and are therefore the favored type of pot to use.
Welcome to the community. i am going to absolutely confirm the first two responses. in the very beginning of your grow the light wont be as important (just about anything will handle seedlings and veg) as soon as you get to flowering Light = Bud.
Since you are stating right up front that funds are an issue, don’t make the mistake may of us make (i am definately in this group) and buy a cheap light “just to get started”. it only guarantees you will be purchasing your second light sooner and using funds you may need somewhere else). definately a LOT of great articles on here about lights. @dbrn32 is def a great source of info and has published a lot.
Once you get started (i.e. some dirt, some seeds, decent light, you may find the next thing you need to look at is a fan (and a charcoal filter for it). again dont go too small (i bought a 4inch only to find i almost immediately had to upgrade to a 6inch to keep my tent temps in check).
So, you may see a trend here. if you would like to save money or start cheap, one of the best ways to do that is to NOT buy things twice. (lol, i am still learning that lesson almost daily).
So, many of these “poor choice” have not been a waste since my tent has 3 compartments, so i have moved my “first purchases” to the smaller sections, But, my original goal was to “start cheap”. at the end of the day, i know i should have read a lot more before i got click happy and started to order.
Right now I’ll be growing in a closet. Not ideal but it’s all I got right now. Size I’ll be doing like 2 plants and each will have a space of 3’ x 3’ give or take.
That isn’t really considered a small space by most. You will need quite a bit of light to get good results in 18 square feet.
In a perfect world you would want a full canopy surrounded by a surface that offers reflective properties. Flat white paint that’s clean does a good job. Then you will size your light according to area to hit recommended ppfd average for cannabis. The “cheap” option would hid light like high pressure sodium. Would call for something like a 400 watt per 3x3. The 400’s are kind of dogs though. If I was going to grow with hps would configure my space to be more in line with a single 600 watt, then go air cooled. This would be good for up to 4x4 space.
I’m a brand new grower into my first grow also, but I concur. I’m growing in a tent, no natural light at all, and at week 6 I’ve already had to “buy thrice” my lighting. Good luck @Shdow ! This is the best place to get great advice!
I would like to thank everybody for the advice it is a big help. one more thing though I was wondering how important plant food is? Is it necessary? And if so what should I get?
Even when growing in the FF soils that many use here, they eventually need to start feeding. Especially calcium and magnesium. In veg stage, you need higher doses of nitrogen. If you are watering to runoff, you will be depleting your nutrients faster thus necessitating the feeding. While I do not use FF soils, many do and use the nutrient products they sell.
At minimum, get some cal-mag.
I’m still a beginner and learned so much from my first grow. My BB auto is now 3 weeks old. I’m feeding 1/2 strength Mega Crop nutrients. Next watering will increase to full strength and see how she reacts.
